He's not going to run for POTUS again. Too old, and wouldn't stand a chance against Trump or Desantis anyway.

Probably just wants to distance himself from the current GOP because he knows how history will look at them, plus he knew she was getting confirmed anyway.

this is likely the correct answer..though he is a bit of a carpetbagger and carpetbaggers generally crave power so i wouldnt say its impossible. i envision desantis flopping in a primary too

I think Trump wins the primary easily if he runs, but if he doesn't then DeSantis is next up.

I had been assuming for a while that he had an eye on running for president in 2024.

Back when it looked like Trump would go away and be viewed as an embarrassment to conservatives after he left office, I thought Romney was preparing to offer himself as the "Republican with integrity" who conservative voters would look to for redemption.

But it is now obvious that the Republican party is still Trump's.

So what is Romney thinking voting to confirm Jackson? He's got to know that that will prevent him from getting anywhere close to the 2024 Republican nomination.
They need that one good embarrassment to let go of Trump. It's coming at midterms and in 2024. Everybody in the Republican party is biding time until he isn't a darlng to voters. Trump is political poison. Losing NV and GA is unforgivable politically. And that will have lasting effects. Notice his supporters never bring that up.

I think he's gunning for a favorable legacy... And a good spot in Mormon heaven.
