I had been assuming for a while that he had an eye on running for president in 2024.

Back when it looked like Trump would go away and be viewed as an embarrassment to conservatives after he left office, I thought Romney was preparing to offer himself as the "Republican with integrity" who conservative voters would look to for redemption.

But it is now obvious that the Republican party is still Trump's.

So what is Romney thinking voting to confirm Jackson? He's got to know that that will prevent him from getting anywhere close to the 2024 Republican nomination.

That adopted black grandchild got him making moves

I think the grandchild played into the vote heavy and him doing the BLM march. People forget this but his father was a big civil rights supporter and even only supported housing proposals from states that did not support segregation.

dude 75 and already shot his shot, breh is just ensuring he's remembered as a man of true conservative principles, not tea party/trump/qanon wacko alt rightism
This and I actually respect him for it

Yeah, I honestly think he just hates what the Republican Party has become and wants to stand up and say that's not who he is.

I don't think he's aiming for power, and I don't think he's cynically trying to manipulate anyone. I think he just straight doesn't fukk with Trumpism and is one of the few Republicans with the guts to say so openly. That doesn't mean the shyt he does support are great principles, but at least he rejected one worst-case scenario.

This is probably him working on his legacy and trying to make sure history judges him well.
