Those aren't even races :wtf:

Won't talk about the situation in the US, but in Europe and Africa a whole lot of people are mixed from different ethnicities/nationalities. So I don't see why it would be different in the US. I have some Italian, Belgian and English heritage on my mother's side, some Central African and Chadian on my father's.

If someone wants to claim his/her's full heritage, what's the problem? Unless of course said person is just bullshytting for whatever reason, but if you don't know that for a fact...:yeshrug:

They're claiming those different ethnicities/nationalities to seem exotic or something. When in reality those are their white slave masters' blood they claiming. This one black woman had the nerve to tell me " Why should I only claim black, when people can look at me and tell I'm mixed" :rudy: this woman was your average brown skin black woman with black features. Nothing screamed mixed about her. Paul Mooney said it best, "yall claiming native american tribes from a great great great uncle that married an "indian" ages ago when in fact that is your slave master's blood."

I know everyone in America got a little bit of everything but I'm black and proud, and that is what I'm claiming. Only black people that might get a pass from me are New Yorkers since it is in fact a melting pot over there.

lots of the time its true though it is north america:manny:

Why claim it though? Whats the reason behind it? I know that I have other races in my family tree from way back but you won't see me claiming it. My uncle's grandfather is latino but he has never claimed to be mixed. So why does some black model that might have had a great great grand uncle/auntie/mother marry a non black person way back when find the need to claim all those different races/nationalities/ethnicities?

OK so if I get it, you're saying that there's no reason to claim a heritage that is not in someway visible? I can dig that. I obviously explain because I'm mixed, but I stop at my parents. The only time I might say, for example, that my grandmother was from Chad is if I meet someone from Chad, and even that's a stretch as I didn't really know her/her country. But if for some reason one of those heritages has an importance for that person (it could be that she knows more about one particular culture than another, and feels he/she's "part" of that culture) then he/she should be able to claim that. Hell, I even sometimes add "I lived in the US/France/Italy" when presenting myself, because it has had a particular influence on me.

*bell sounds*
*puts stool in the corner*

:what: no it didnt... FIGHT BACK nikka. You need to be bobbing and weaving!
It just picked apart your statement and gave you an argument you werent even making. Slaves took their owners last name whether they were mixed or not. What it said had no bearing!

:damn:
not only am i not an "it," but I can see you have a vague understanding of black american surnames and logic.

white women are worse with this

not only do they claim native american... and other various things. They also say dumb sh1t like, "I'm not white, I'm Italian or German"

It's ok to say your mixed if you really are and can identify with that culture. But most of the time, it comes from being ashamed to simply say black.

:mjpls: at the bolded

Besides the few that made up their last name like "Freeman" after the Civil War and during Reconstruction... tell me where American blacks get their last names from then. Tell me why American blacks have last names like "Taylor" or "Smith" :smugfavre:

Just want to say that in general people should stop using "race" when talking about nationalities/origins.

But concerning this post that's something I would also do occasionally, especially when someone says "oh you're black", sometimes it just feels like they're implicitly saying "oh you're black, doesn't really matter from where". No one likes being put in a box, so I answer "No, I'm mixed, Belgian and Central African". Because that's what I am. I don't necessarily share much with an African American from San Antonio or a dude from Lesotho (nor with a dude from Denmark for that matter). I can understand a white person feeling the same: If a black person tells them "You're white", they might feel being put into a box with all kinds of other white persons they don't necessarily share stuff with. What does a German share with a Texan, or even with a Croat? So they might answer with specifics. In general Europeans don't really refer to themselves as "whites" anyway, just like any other race it's way too heterogeneous (Western Europeans, Scandinavians, Southern Europeans, Slavs, Eastern Europeans...Americans, Australians...all very different people, just like "Blacks").

But as I answered earlier, if the mixed heritage just comes out of the blue, then they're may indeed be some "trying to sound exotic" going on.

:what: your post sounds like you don't really know much and you're just trying to stretch the little you do know into a paragraph, but really you're just being repetitive. overall your response was basically an "okay then what." sounds weak. cassius clay my ass. :pacspit: you're more like the guy tyson knocked out in 30 seconds.

i'd be willing to bet at least half black americans don't have surnames from their ancestor's slave masters. people overestimate the amount of large plantations there were. if there aren't that many white people with that last names, and the whites with those surnames didn't have large plantations then why do so many blacks have those surnames? link below.
