Do your research and pick a language. I am trying to focus on web applications and backend API services so I have been working mainy with Ruby and Ruby on Rails. HTML/CSS will come easily over time. You want to get started learning the basics of Ruby like conditional statements, looping, using methods and classes.

A great place to start is learnrubythehardway.org, the shyt is free. My advice is just get started, it sucks in the beginning because you have to learn mundane things that seem confusing and you can't figure out what the purpose of it all is; but after a month or two things really start to pick up and you can build some cool shyt.

For example right now I am working on building a web app that keeps track of every negative tweet that is sent to @comcast and then every negative tweet that is sent to @twc. Every hour the app hits twitters api and stores these tweets in my DB. I am going to have a home page that has a graph representing the amount of tweets ppl send about hating either of those two companies and compare them.

This is a small pointless project but I enjoy doing it and it helps me learn.(Also fukk TWC and Comcast) Try to pick something that you are interested in and build a program about that.

Last week when Kanye was losing his mind on twitter I decided to make this: www.yetweets.us

Just pick a project and try to get started if you want any more advice hit me up

Yoo you are doing some pretty advanced shyt for someone who just picked up ruby :salute:

Like I've been saying. Nikkas are pretty damn creative, if we took this developer / coding shyt serious we would swarm all the hot tech spots. i wish this actually happened, because sometimes it can just plain suck when you basically run into only a couple or no black developers in asian / white dominated joints :to:

although i'm sure there's some truly black excellence type shyt happening in places like atlanta,, et al which are majority black :ohlawd:

Yeah, I don't have the will or interest. I was trying to learn java and had a bunch of other books, just went and gave them to my little cousin.

That's fair, at least you gave it a shot - it shows you are willing to step outside of your comfort zone. In any case, if you ever started a venture and had to contract out to or hire developers you'd kinda know how to talk to them. You should never downplay any attempt at anything whether you succeeded or failed.

& personally I think it's just the interest that sunk you. some people just don't have the patience to give a computer precise instructions to do what it needs to do.

Yeah, people need to get in on this ASAP. You would think oversaturation would cause the market on this to bottom out, but 2 things keep that from happening.
1. More and more companies and systems are requiring devs
2. Not that many people know how to code despite this trend.
Which is funny to me because if I compare my level of coding when I had my first dev job (primarily debugging, documentation, and library creation) to what I know now.... I didn't know shyt :pachaha:

I promise anybody on this forum. If you are unemployed, you can self-teach enough C++/Java in 4 weeks to get a job making 55k-65k easy. If you keep leaving the company after each project you do, you'll be 6ix figures in a matter of years.

And people wonder why IT is such a sought after area. Its free money for minimal effort:dead:
Breh I've been programming for about a year and a half and you're telling me people can get a job in the field after only 4 weeks of study? :wtf:

How do I actually break in?

Certs and experience, yep
How can I acquire some certs? I'm really motivated to get into this field and have tons of free time, I just need to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks for any response
