Annie Hall over Star Wars in 1978
i guess i could say Star Wars not winning at the 50th award show
What killed it for me was the 81st show
not only did The Dark Knight not even get nominated
but slumdog won the best picture
since 2010 i havent heard anybody mention slumdog at all
Annie Hall is a more compelling movie then star wars.
you ever watched annie hall?
A man is trying to figure why his relationship went wrong and it is not your typical love story. It did not have a happy ending and the writing style was unique.
Star wars on the other hand was your typical hero story where a dude saves a princess. Although I am sure what killed star wars was mark Hamill's acting. And you should know by now when it comes to best picture the academy does not care about special effects.
ive seen it years ago and there are probably 5 better movies from that year, some nominated, some not.
if it was a typical hero story movie, why was it nominated by the academy at all? it changed the face of modern filmmaking. it is indisputably THE most important film of that year and probably the last 50 years if you wanna take it there. you can debate whether being good or being important should win best picture i guess. the academy flip flops on that all the time. those two movies are apples and oranges anyways.

Annie Hall over Star Wars in 1978
Annie Hall is up there with story star wars as far as influence and film making goes. Star wars for what it did for Science Fiction films and Hall for Romantic commies. Just because you don't personally like Annie Hall does not take away from its great writing and a unique premise.
"Annie Hall" was really just another Woody Allen comedy, sure it's Classic but it wasn't a game changer like "Star Wars". The Academy has a long history of denying Sci-Fi it's right to win Best Picture. There still hasn't been a Sci-Fi Best Picture in History. Again I don't want to take nothing away from "Annie Hall", I know it's a Classic but it should not have beaten "Star Wars". Again The Academy has a Sci-Fi Bias.
Star wars was a game changer insofar as showing that Science Fiction movies make money and can compete with A-list movies. But as far as acting and story is it really better Alien, Altered States, Close encounters of the thrid kind or 2001: A Space Odyssey?
An absolute tragedy that should never be forgotten.
SPR is a fukking masterpiece of film making.
What does it matter, "Alien, 2001" and other sci-fi masterpieces never get their credit from the Academy anyways and yes "Star Wars" is up there with all them as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. The point is Star Wars changed History. "Annie Hall" really didn't, it was a quality Woody Allen film which during that era most all his films were quality. I know it's Big in the Romantic Comedy genre but it did not again change the way we view Romantic comedy where as Star Wars changed the way we watch movies period.
Take the whole "Avatar" vs "The Hurt Locker". I'm fine with ol girl winning cause it was sad that a woman Director hasn't won an Oscar (A Black Director still has never won Best Director) but "Avatar" was the better film clearly but again if you listen to the Academy, Sci-Fi just isn't Best Picture Quality.
That's the biggest problem with the awards, they give more credit to Drama's and Romantic Comedy's when there has been some amazing storytelling and acting in Sci-Fi. I can't wait for a Sci-Fi film to sweep the Oscars, "Star Wars" was the closet we've gotten. "Lord of the Rings" was more Fantasy and the only reason it won was cause they were rewarding the trilogy as a whole.
