96/97 reign was much worse and nearly put the company out of business. By the time HBK won at Survivor Series in 97, Austin was pretty much a made man biding his time for the Rumble win and The Rock was on the cusp of breaking out. His back injury at the 98 Rumble sped up the inevitable that he wouldn't be the focal point anymore.

They were never going out of business. Vince is a carney and he conned everyone into thinking this so he could pay the boyz less money and look even better after he beat WCW and put them out of business. It makes him look like a rags to riches story.

And maybe cena u.s reign as well

With wwe its hard to gauge because its more about story lines, big moments and promos than actual matches.

With njpw its more about match quality
