@LordDeathwatch Man with only 2 episodes left of Kingdom S4 for me. It's hard to compare S4 & S3. S3 was a stand against the coalition army. Basically Qin stands against the other nations and Li Mu in particular. It's more so showcased how tactics on the battlefield. Seeing both the current and upcoming generation step up. Zheng and Xin in particular showcasing great heart and determination.
S4 felt it really dived into the politics. As this truly was the battle to decide it all between Zheng and Lu Buwei. In the anime I am more of a fan of the politics dynamic because everything has meaning. The chess match that ensure from it is fascinating to me. Seeing Zheng and Buwei play it with their fellow associates had you truly drawn in with each move that would happen. Author has done a fantastic job.
First note we see before the rebellion actually getting under way. Both Ben and Xin with big achievements. Even though Xin got his by accident
We have always seen Ben grinding and coming up with the plan to get that W is where you really see his potential being fully utilized. However, I do like what Teng mentioned for Ben being promoted straight to general would be a bad idea. Ever step on the way to being a general is key and skipping Brigadier would be a mistake. Xin knows that in the game to being a general first, Ben is slightly ahead, but that will only boost his morale.
I will give the author credit here. You can take a PoS character like Zheng's mom and do some good characterization with her character really shows he knows what he is doing. She is a woman who was used and left by her previous lovers. Lao Ai was basically the person she needed at the time. Where she ended up having two kids, and you can see she loves him. Even more scummy is her kids were used as threats to get the rebellion rolling. Truly scum Lu Buwei's group is
Don't get me wrong she is a terrible person. The way she continues to treat Zheng is terrible.
Man talk about a scene that had me jumping out of my seat like
Chengping was a guy we could tell was a bit wish washy. But man to make the move to defect from Lu Buwei and join Zheng's faction was an insane moment. It literally was what Zheng needed to beat Buwei. It wasn't for it is without certain Zheng would have lost. Diao's two tactician mentors being on Zheng's side can't be understated.
Buwei does mention getting his monies worth out of Chengping. Which makes me wonder does he view all his pillars as replaceable pawns?
The conversation between Zheng and Buwei was one very interesting one. As we know Zheng wants to unify the Middle Kingdom. For Buwei his ambitions dates back to his merchant days. He wants to use wealth instead of war. He does bring some points that creating allies with various nations and staying in their good company would be a much more ideal solution. Fewer lives would be at risk.
However, Zheng brings up a great point. Eventually when do the other warring turn on Buwei's ideal Qin? We could trade for those riches? But we could take it all for ourselves. Overall Buwei's utopia feels too out of touch of reality. As a merchant you always assume things will go your way. When you are a King, you can't have that mindset. Which really shows that Zheng is the man to take Qin to the next level.
You know Xin is a fukking idiot. But this was a great moment to let him know that he has that it factor that a general needs. The number 1 priority is saving Xin's kid. God forbid something happens to Xin the spot would be on them. This being a part of Buwei's plan make my stomach crawl. It wasn't easy but Xin got the save for the girls and Xin's daughter.
The irony here is that general's son got caught by Xin so fast because of all the civilians he killed along the way. The contrast between him and Xin was clear. Xin we know from S2 despises people like that. People who appear strong to the weak, but when a strong person like Xin comes around they are weak in comparison. Even more sickening was him talking about taking pleasure in killing civilians. I am surprised Xin didn't kill him on the spot for saying that.
Beyond that we got a fun moment when uncle Xin introduces himself to Zheng's daughter. It's funny where you can see she has a lot of her father's personality.
Man oh man. It can't be understated the impression that Lord Chengping made his quelling this rebellion. He gets touted as having the military prowess as Meng Wu and brains on the level of Li Mu. Talk about hyping a man up. Well we know that the later part holds up very well. He was so key in alerting both Diao and Xin so they can get to Xianyang as soon as they could.
But the part of having military prowess on the level of Meng Wu is really saying something. Now granted he isn't in combat as much as Meng Wu nowadays, so there is a worry of rust. But man oh man he solo and chopped the head of that opposing general with easy
. Him now being on Zheng's side is even more of a big deal then anyone realized before.
Here we get a big scene dedicated to showing how great the influence of Zheng is. Like Zheng, he has a dream of unifying the Middle Kingdom. How Zheng went about going to the last stand in Zui was bits of sparks that let him know that Zheng is the one to accomplish this impossible task. Now with Zheng beating Buwei the internal battle within Qin is over, and they can continue back to the external fight with the other nations.
Also, dead ass Xin speaking to Chengping like he is his equal.
