This might seem weird but now that I'm older I find myself subconciously bumping up the the ages of characters from a lot of shonen shows now. Does anyone else experience this?

It's like I know the official ages but my brain refuses to believe that these 10-15 year olds can look like and be doing all these things at their age so they have to be older than what they are. Maybe it's because now that I'm almost 30 I see how young kids really are at that age whereas when I was a teenager myself it felt perfectly fine

best thing you can do is picture it as a story that's being told to to you, and not something you're experiencing as a by-stander..

If not, you'll be looking at it like Marvel/DC.

The greater bulk of Marvel franchises started in 1963.

In THEIR years, it's been between 11-15 years.

depends on the show for me.

HxH doesn't allow Gon or Killua to dominate in an adult driven world. They are vulnerable, naive, often overmatched. So I can't not think of them as kids when HxH wants you to understand that they are kids who won't solve every problem with willpower.

but then there's JoJo, where everyone looks like a linebacker until part 4 or so. Age not really a factor in strength or anything that important to the story itself.

Getting deeper into Yu Yu Hakusho it made me further appreciate a "controversial" storytelling decision that Gurren Lagann made.

That "controversy" being Simon falling into depression after Kamina's death lasting a whole 3 episodes. I still remember seeing a ton of complaints that it sucked and Simon needed to get over it. It always struck me as weird because it totally fit Simon's character to mourn his "big brother" and struggle to get back up.

Of course the contrast becomes clear when you watch Yusuke get over Genkai's death in the span of a single episode. Even other characters who are hurt by her death like Botan are quickly cheered up. Anime is so much escape fantasy for people they want characters to overcome adversity quickly and preferably grow stronger out of it too.

Gurren Lagann injected its over the top mecha story with a realistic and dedicated take on the process of grief and a lot of fans could not compute. It feels similar to me how quite a bunch of people disliked Vash' determination on pacifism in Trigun as it started to become "counter productive" and give the bad guy more leeway. The average protagonist in anime is so protected in their ability to 'overcome all odds' that even minor divergences are almost considered unpleasant by fans.

still in awe of how nice the fades and transitions are in Horimiya. You can tell what a character is going through from the direction alone. Like Miyamura's struggles with being ostracized in school, his insecurities about whether he deserves to have friends or not.

Another great episode this week. I feel like I'm watching a mount rushmore esque romance in the making.
Haven't started this yet but it has an almost 8 rating on Anidb which is almost unheard of for such a show. It must be a masterpiece.

lol man .I feel like 'anime age' is different because a lot of these characters don't look and act their age. Its fiction.

You can't tell me these characters are under 18. I swear all the characters in prince of tennis look 30+ with kids and not your average middle schoolers.

Watching Bebop back think I was tell @Consumed I planned to for a while. On episode 8 & it’s beautiful how relatable the adult struggles are in this show & Spike in general. How you deal with the past & if you want leave it or not, how the 3 main characters deal with moving on etc

Every episode has such a profound message so far. I was especially impressed by how good Episode 1 was

@twan83 Cueing up Parasyte for the girls first dip into somewhat violent/gory anime. I'll know by the end of the episode if they're ready or not. :sadcam:

I just instanteously burst out laughing when I heard Dio's VA in Sk8 as the (presumable) end boss. Dude's voice is just so recognizable and animated it's starting to approach Norio Wakamoto levels of meme.

I would never take an anime site's rating as gospel but it is one the best SOL Romance in ages (I know folks will mention Kaguya-sama but that one is also heavily comedy reliant). I know this because every time I watch a great romance anime I'm remembering the tragedy that they never finished Kaichou Wa Maid-sama. :mjcry:

I don't for the most part but when any romance show on that site gets over an 8 it's almost always great. That site uses the full scale. Usually on other sites the scale is 6-10 but on anidb it's literally 1-10.
