I was randomly watching a few episodes back of Rurouni Kenshin on netflix as had nothing else to do and its still fukking amazing. Kenshin (the anime) never truly gets the praise it deserves for how much depth and good the writing is and this doesnt just include the Kyoto Arc. I feel there is alot of stuff in this show that went our heads and I can see why it didnt too do well on the Toonami Run

@Consumed honestly, I have this on the same level as Yu Yu as far as shounen goes, I feel the fizzing out at the of the show hurts it, but when it was at its peak, very little comes close to the levels it reached.

deserves a 10/10 just for giving us Heart of the Sword

Only real negative Rurouni Kenshin has is that we have to watch an OVA and read the manga before getting the full story. If we combine it all it's up there.

the setting being based on a defining period in Japanese history and borrowing from real life influences to create convincing characters with flaws (lots of PTSD) and motivations (some good, some bad, none without merit i.e Shishio) does make it a very layered shounen, even more so than YYH I'd say. You could go into a ton of detail with a least a dozen characters. Even someone minor like Shishio's wife and the trans samurai.

Exactly, its real life influences it taps into of what was going on during this timeframe are really exceptional. Just for example the episodes I watched was a whole mini storyline of a younger samurai being made fun of and belittled because he wasnt into being a warrior, and interested in "Science" and the thought of man traveling to the Moon. In the very episodes, another samurai is influenced by the Western culture of Fencing sword style, and even wears traditional American clothing at the time instead. The Easter eggs of this show when tapping into the turn of the century/time period are next level.

In terms of convincing compelling characters, with unique and detailed backstory, I'd put this show up there with the best, in a genre where writers. struggle to write at least 1-2, Kenshin has a good 10-12 character who truly are so well developed and could be focused on even more. I never watched the OVA or read the manga as was always confused on how it related to anime. The anime is an easy 10/10 for me

should check out Samurai X Reflections sometime. It's controversial for reversing the manga ending and killing certain characters, but it's more realistic to the struggle of a samurai without a purpose to live for post war.

The only shounen I know of that can match Kenshin's character depth are FMA and Gintama. Hopefully it gets a brotherhood remake someday.
