Finished the 1st season of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. The artform of verbal storytelling gives two orphans purpose in a world that doesn't value them otherwise. They grow up together as surrogate brothers and rival each other to become performance legends. Really good characterization between the two, and one of the morals of their relationship is you can never assume your rival has the ideal life. They probably envy everything about you too.
Lots of historical context about Rakugo and japanese performance arts. Definitely shows how fickle the industry can be. There was boom in attendance post war where most people are looking for distractions wherever they can find them. Then the television is introduced and movie theater popularized, killing interest and sending most performers into poverty. Tough career.
This anime reminded me a lot of Kids on the Slope. Thought there would be a relation between the two.
