Is it worth watching? These metro-sexual young men in the cover made me overlook this.

:wow:Dude the first episode had me hooked. It reminds me of the game Valkyria Chronicles with a 17th century twist to the show:ehh:. This year been kinda trash anime wise besides Pop Team Epic and Megalo box, but this show has some promise to it.

because it checks every box for a classic shounen and doesn't suffer from any of the crippling negatives like filler, drawn out battle arcs, bullshyt power ups and one dimensional characters. The fights are intense, the superpower designs are badass and fun, the villains are complex and have reasonable convictions for their beliefs and the animation holds up well today (not the aesthetic, but the actual animation. Several current industry greats got their start in YYH).

Main character isn't some weak little kid with no backbone who gets bullied and needs a power up to assert himself. Yusuke is the bully, and you get to watch him grow from a boy with no direction in his life to a man with full understanding of self and life aspirations. He's got one of the most rewarding character arcs in the genre. Kuwabara, Hiei, Kurama and just about every character central to the story are well written too.

I'd be more interested in knowing why someone doesn't like YYH.
Yuske is my favorite shonen protagonist. As much as I like HxH gon is kind of a selfish bytch. Naruto is gay for Sasuke. I like dekku and see the potential but he cries a lot. Natsu is annoying. Goku pre Dragon ball super was iight but in super he is extremely one dimensional. Just wants to fight no matter what. Luffy is good but can be a little too simple minded sometimes.

Yuske is a bad ass from the start. Takes no shyt from anyone but deep down he's a good guy and they show you all that from the first episode. He's not a complete goody two shoes though admits when he fukks up and doesnt know what he wants to do with his life. He's more layered than the traditional shonen protagonist of "I wanna be hokage" "I wanna fight strong people!" "I'm gonna be king of the pirates!" "My magic is never giving up!"

I have no idea what Valkyria is, however, I've heard of the name. Is the anime about war?

Exactly. Yusuke doesn't have any goals in life, he only wants to discover himself and be understood by those around him like any other teenager. His mom is an alcoholic, his dad is never around, his teachers are corrupt and assume the worst of him. Only way he can express himself and seek confirmation is through fighting, and he eventually finds an outlet through his work as a spirit detective. There's more relatability and nuance to Yusuke than just about any shounen lead out there. Him being such an outlier is a reason YYH is seen as one of the GOAT anime, not even getting into the battle arcs, villains, balanced power system and the other three great main characters alongside him.

I completely disagree that YYH is just a nostagia wave, I rewatched it + completed it in full just last year and can say it and HXH 2011 are the best of the genre by a wide margin ( I'd actually have Kenshin 3rd making up the way). The writing + characters backgrounds/development as well as fight and whole vibe of show is as good as you can get in a Shounen

To me Luffy is the best shonen protagonist.

This was the moment I knew. Moments like this are why One Piece is the best.

still think Kid-Saiyan Saga Goku is my favorite shonuen protaganist. Why it hurts how much they've ruined his character through the years

yea i dont see yu yu as some nostalgia shyt. Mostly because i watched it waaaaaaaaay later than most ppl. I didnt even know it was on during the dbz days cuz all i watched was dbz. I didnt watch it til like a decade ago probably and i fukking loved it. It was just so refreshing to watch a show that showed everyone holding their own and not just the MC getting wins. Every character had strategies and feats to defeat different opponents and it was just dope af. Plus im a sucker for tournaments and this show had one of the GOAT tournaments ever. Im actually rewatching it now because of the dude on this board. shyt got me all up in my feelings right from the jump and i love this shyt :mjcry:.....if u dont like YYH u dont like shounen. Period
