While it's true that most "African"-Americans have never been to Africa, every time I hear a black person use that as a reason for why they don't like the designation, it seems like they're unduly proud of their American heritage and are on some Uncle Tom "I ain'ts no African. I's an American just like you, Mr Boss Man!" BS.
It's ridiculous to me to focus negative attention on the term African-American when there are much worse terms that would take priority in my mind as far as what we should disavow (i.e. "******, nikka").
Yea, it's saying a long time ago we came from a continent. Other than that I have no ties to Africa. It's not about being uber American, it's about not denying the fact that my ancestors worked just as hard as anybody elses to get this country running. I always felt like adding that continental split to our pre American denounces us like we aint supposed to be here.
Some people see being called African anything validates you into something. But it doesn't unless you're actually from somewhere in Africa.
I agree with that. It is a little piece of pride to hear African in there. But in America it's used more to take away than it is to give, you can see that in all the subliminals the repubs are shootin at the pres. I think that's how a lot of people see it.I know a few people like this even some hispanics.
I'm somewhere in between i suppose on the [insert racial/ethnical classification]-american.
People that have been here for generations from a different racial group typically are just now called american...right?
I know SOMETIMES you get things like Irish american or Italian american but by and large you just see these groups being called american.
When i see someone calling someone african american or mexican american i'm both salty about the separate designation AND a little prideful as well in that designation as i know there is some pride to be had in the struggle of these groups of people...
Black or Original black or Asiatic black
Asia being the body, Attic being the mind. This includes all men and women of "color".
Both "Africans" and "Americans" are named after a white person.

Word.
Would ya'll prefer American-Africans to African-Americans?
I'm first generation, I look at people funny when they go too hard with the "I'm not African " talk. Black people come from Africa. Thats why you're black...
