Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Nope, both my wife and daughters are #TeamNatural. My wife has been for almost 15 years. way before it was trendy, and you know what ? She took hella sh!t for it professionally. She has a masters degree and is a hospital administrator, and spends her days auditing and correcting white doctors. I love her and am proud of her.
But I'd be lying if I couldn't admit, that her hair was a professional liability for years when working or going for jobs. Especially before it became trendy, to the point old white doctors would make comments to her director about it after meeting with her, or even black women on job interviews would mention it to her face as an issue. It was her choice and I'm proud of her for sticking with what she believed and over time it became less of an issue.

And of course I know professional men with dreads, I joke all the time about growing out my hair myself. I have no delusion that how they dress or keep their hair will be a bullet proof vest. I'm not stupid, I'm a 30 something black man that has seen his share of murder, drugs, police brutality, and harassment. I did my share of dumb stuff and running from cops as a shorty, at 22 I was stopped and taken to jail simply because I was driving a brand new car and they couldn't find a record under my name and wanted to run my prints cause I "had to be dirty", detained me for hours looking for out of state warrants "Because I was clean and driving a nice car". So being "presentable" even caused me issues.

All I was trying to say is I know enough to know that there is a "type" or "mold" that the police ACTIVELY try to fcuk with where I live. Like go out of their way to assume are up to no good and treat differently. So with that knowledge I just say, why give the oppressors another reason to bother my seeds if I don't have to ? As men they can do whatever they want, I want them to be educated and good at their jobs so even if they do decide to grow their hair out or whatever else white folks may try to prejudge them on, like my wife they'll have the tools and knowledge to rise above it. But right now, they're just little black boys, and I'm scared for them when they're out there in the world away from me:sad:.

No disrespect or ill will towards anyone who feels differently. Stay blessed Coli fam.
I noticed when someone posted the Black ceo's of the largest corporations, many of the Black women were just natural. The whole flowing hair in the wind is some pretentious shyt cacs somehow passed on and our women gobbled right up. I was stunned that these Black women heading some of the top firms out there, hadn't conformed to what their less fortunate sisters are doing. Many Black women have convinced themselves that they can't make it out there unless they have a weave or perm. Basically they think the clumps of hair scalped from some Asians head is the key to all success. But I think they just want to play Barbie as grown ass women. Good to see some men still can decide the course their families take.

dope story... reminds me of that living single episode where they wanted Kyle to cut his dreads, or they weren't giving him a promotion to partner. he said fukk that.. i can't remember if he got the job or not

but lets not kid ourselves like appearance doesn't matter. my stepdad is pretty high up in the chain with his company. but he told me everytime before, when he'd go for an interview, he'd shave his facial hair. why? cause if you notice, MOST men in business settings (suit, tie) look clean cut. it's just a more "professional" look

white people have this too.. you not showing up to an interview with hair like kurt cobain or willie nelson or flipped up into a mohawk. what if some white girl showed up to judge a case, with blue streaks and pigtails... i tell black women this all the time... and NO disrespect to your wife cause i haven't seen her, nor know her style...

NATURAL IS NOT A HAIRSTYLE... an afro is a hairstyle.. it's still natural.. a cesar is a hairstyle.. it's still natural... a perm is a hairstyle... it is NOT natural

waking up with your hair all fukked up, not even running a comp or pick through it... then walking around talking bout "this is natural" isn't professional, stylish, or even a damn hair style.. you're just not combing your damn hair everyday... now imagine if white people just woke up, went to work, and said "hey don't tell me to put it in a ponytail, this is natural"

it's a shame we are so judgemental but appearance matters... don't think so.. show up to an interview in some jordans, jeans and a jersey and a fresh chain on... to a black owned business.. and see if they give a fukk about your right to wear what you want.. people judge and treat you how you look

that's why people say, dress for where you want to be, not where you're at. image means everything

"I felt that we could sit and have a candid conversation about race and he wouldn’t take soundbites. He would let the entire conversation live. And he didn’t. And that’s what frustrates me … Mr. Witherspoon really p*ssed me off because I trusted him and he lied."

he said sorry brehs

:heh:

He can't save himself this time.... notice he doesn't attempt to say that his words were taken out of context, or even deny that he was kicking some respectability politics...but rather attempts to elaborate on what he supposedly meant.

That alone tells me that:
1. He really meant what got quoted, cause he's mad it got out
2. He thought he got kick that bullshyt safely and still get black dollars playing characters in the same roles that would fit the same description his dreadlocked nephew would fit.

Yep, he was caught with his pants down. I wonder how he'll do black films from now on.

On his nephew growing dreadlocks:
Turning to the topic of recent nationwide protests against racial profiling, Mackie offered a unique perspective.

“Like my nephew wanted to grow dreadlocks. I’m like fine, I’ll sit you down and I’ll watch The First 48 with you and everybody you see on that show, that’s doing something wrong, they’re black dudes with dreadlocks. So, do you want to be seen as part of the problem or do you want to be an individual?”

“Let’s just say you have locks and you walking down the street. The police pull you over and say you fit the description of somebody. You start yelling and arguing with the cops. Next thing you know you pressed up against the wall going to jail for something you’re not even involved in just because you look like somebody and you don’t know how to handle yourself,” Mackie said.

On Selma:
Mackie said that Selma is having trouble at the box-office and didn’t fare well with Oscar voters because people are turned off by the film’s subject matter.

“People are just tired of being bombarded with race right now,” Mackie said. “So everybody is shying away from certain topics and certain movies.”

why couldn't he just tell his neph that growing locks will more than likely have him be a target of racist cacs and teach him how to handle that. To equate it to being a thug is just ignorant and c00ning like a mufukka.

Come on Falcon :what:
That's what someone with some wisdom would've said his suggestion basically justified the police stereotyping.

Dude is making his ascendency into the Hollywood elite. Part of that process in modern times is shedding your blackness in order to be apart of the new Amerikkka. He's not a Black actor just an actor who happens to be Black. I do agree with his point about Selma, having seen it, it's far more uncomfortable for white america (and blacks) than it seemed at the surface, and the Black movie watchers would much rather watch a comedy or a romance before something that reminds how far we really haven't come. We crave escapism.
