Ohtani's a FA after next season. He's out if he's not traded. Trout got a long way to go.
I can't imagine any team will give up a ton of prospects for Ohtani now.
Let's say the a team like the Yankees traded for Ohtani in the offseason.

First off, if you're Shohei Ohtani and you're 28 years old and you are going to be a free agent at the end of 2023 at 29 years old....this is probably your only chance to sign a huge, long term contract. Why would you sign an extension with the Yankees? Why wouldn't you just exercise your Free Agent rights and pressure teams to engage in a bidding war?

Of course you'd want to be a free agent if you're Shohei Ohtani.

And on the other side of that...if you're the Yankees, would you give up big time prospects for a guy who will be a Free Agent that could sign with another team next winter? You really want to give up Volpe or Dominguez for 1 year of Ohtani? That's crazy.

So the Angels have to throw a huge contract extension to Ohtani now and hope he stays. Or they absolutely need to move him this winter because his trade value drops significantly once the season begins.

I don't know which teams would be interested in this winter.

The Dodgers could make a move -- especially with Trevor Bauer being a disaster. But do the Angels really want to trade him there? Not a chance.

What about San Diego? Well that would sting less than the Dodgers but considering the Padres have financial flexibility in the coming years, they would be better off just signing Ohtani as a free agent next year.

The Giants? Hell if they were rumored to trade Carlos Rodon this past summer, it's hard to see them pushing to get Ohtani when they already have an Ace on that roster.

The other big market teams: Yankees probably aren't emptying their farm system for him. The Mets don't have much to trade anyway. The Cubs are years from contending and Ohtani would never sign an extension there so it makes zero sense for CHC to explore that trade. So what's the alternative? Boston? Good luck getting Ohtani to go from sunny SoCal to a 60-win team in Boston.

I really have no idea what the Angels are going to do. If you believe the clowns at Bleacher Report, they think SDP, TOR, STL and ATL are the top candidates for a trade. Atlanta committed a lot of money to young stars there. I'd be surprised if they sent 2 or 3 of them to Anaheim. Maybe TOR or STL could be interesting.

With the game going to a balanced schedule, plus the universal DH, they might as well do away with league awards and just make it one award.
:jbhmm:

Imagine you have a bonus in your contract for winning mvp. And you come in 2nd. But if there were 2 leagues you’d have come in first in your league…

I disagree, the cubs aren’t years from contending, they reloaded the farm & have no long term contracts.they’ll be in the wild card mix next season(after signing fa’s this winter)& ‘24 & ‘25 will be back for real

I agree with your other points about the ohtani situation , intrigued to see what happens with that. Seiya Suzuki is his good friend & darvish is his idol I think the cubs will pursue him as a fa after ‘23 season. They’ll definitely have the dough

The Yankees have to pursue Rodon hard if he’s a FA.

A lefty ace with that kind of K potential?
They can’t afford to NOT have him.
yanks have become extremely cheap though, rodan has had injury problems in the past.

At this point it’s clear that the Yankees have Cole and that’s it.

Severino can’t go a week without getting hurt. Montgomery got traded to STL. How long until Montas is a FA?

They need pitching. And they don’t have any immediate help in the minors.

You'll get David Price and Chris Sale and be happy with it. :steviej:
