I understand there's levels to it and it's worth it for Soto. The teams that are vying for him also have major holes elsewhere. If the Yankees for example only needed Soto, no questions asked, but they got pitching issues, starting and bullpen. Their SS sucks and they'd be theoretically be trading any hope of a replacement for IKF.

The Mets on the other hand need to grab the city by the throat. Soto on the Mets would cancel out not getting A-Rod in 2000.
There's no guarantee any of their prospects fill the void. The only notable players from their system on the team are Judge and Sevy.

I remember the hype around Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Jesus Montero, Justus Sheffield, Miguel Andujar, Gleybar Torres, Gary Sanchez, Jorge Mateo.

I would be shocked if Volpe or Dominguez wind up even close to the player Soto is and likely will be for the next decade. That guy is built for New York and Yankee Stadium.

This time of year always annoys me when teams are so reluctant to give up their top prospects for a big time player

Throughout history the team that gets the star player usually wins the trade

Look at what Miggy Cabrera was traded for?

Soto is easily worth your top 3 or 4 prospects hes only 23 and only a few years older then some of these prospects

The vast majority of top prospects never amount to anything.
I think nikkas look at the rays and believe their farm can produce a bunch of people. If I’m in win now mode tho them prospects are outta here.

Forgot about the new draft lotto rules. Only allowing teams to pick in the top 6 2 years in a row is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

Tanking is the only way to somehow compete with teams who have 300 million dollar payrolls

Yeah the majority of prospects amount to nothing no matter how good a team is at scouting.

Like you said there are outliers like the Rays and it seems like the Red Sox are abnormally good at drafting/developing bats but most teams it’s a crapshoot

Here's the inherent issue with acquiring Soto (and why I'd do it anyway): nobody is convinced that the team will spend the money to keep both Soto and Judge, especially when now we'll have this glaring hole at SS where we passed up every possible free agent there because we're waiting on Volpe. Now, I'm super bullish on Volpe and the Martian, but I'd trade them both for Soto, but I'm also in the extreme minority where I wouldn't be comfortable paying Judge 10/$360.

The names you mentioned are what the Yankees are lacking in comparison to some of these other teams. Atlanta got a homegrown core. The Mets even still have deGrom/Alonso/McNeil/Nimmo. The Dodgers have their guys they brought up, Astros too. The Yankees are reduced to just Judge and he's 30. If they can't assemble a group of players from their own system to build around, they're gonna have to spend an obscene amount of money to put out a competitive product and management has proven too many times they won't do it even though they can, so it's quite likely if Soto's a Yankee it'll just be him, Lemahieu and Aaron Hicks for the next 12 years together with Cole locked up too.

Nation Of Fun

I was randomly watching this game for either gambling or Berrios pitching reasons and I remember the Blue Jays announce team was furious with Vlad making gestures to the dug out after the play they couldnt challenge after they had wasted it. The announcers said "You cant just show up your manager like that. I'd bench him right there."

Yeah. Bench your best young player before they sign an extension because you're mad they rightly told you not to challenge a play. These old guys cant age out of the game quick enough.

Can someone explain to me how literally every year the Yankees and Dodgers sign one of the top international prospects?

Aren’t there supposed to be rules put in place to where if you spend a certain amount of money in a year on international prospects that you can’t spend big for the next year or two?
