really impressed with the defensive line, secondary-echols and bonney in particular, jerrod heard, the foreman brothers and malik.

this team is aggressive and fast. i can't wait till we get the rest of the freshman class to fill out the team. i'm really looking forward to seeing anthony wheeler and cecil cherry.

Ian Boyd from IT & SB Nation's Football Study Hall did this write-up on the Spring Game:

Coupla spring game takeaways

I'm going to bullet these out and then we can chat about what our different eyes saw.

-Bonney is the real deal at nickel. I saw him blitz well, set the edge with authority, make plays in the backfield, and also show the quickness to carry a receiver down the seam. It's apparently silly to worry overmuch about Strong's defenses because the young guys really flashed today.

-Haines looked good as well. He made some physical tackles in space. Texas has some good players to utilize in the middle of the field and make long drives difficult. The hope will now become that they are paired with Malik and Freeman in the fall because those two linebackers are WAY above average athletes for the position.

-Both DLs were very good. The 2nd team DL was being supported by a LB corps of Malik-Freeman-Vaccaro, which is a very physical and athletic unit, but then four walk-ons in the secondary. Nonetheless, they often shut down the offense.

Hard to say too much here without looking at tape but Cottrell and Boyette really flashed and looked unmanageable at times on the 2nd team DL. Ridgeway and Hughes had noticeable impacts on the 1st team group.

-OL improvements were not obvious. Tackle has to be a concern but there's a lot of time for these guys to get it together since there's a lot of new blood out there.

Flowers seems to have a starting job locked down but he was just plain beat up by Boyette at times.

-The design of the Texas defense is to take away the outside run on the option and then fly to the ball when it goes inside. The Texas OL was unable to get much going against that save for a rare power-read featuring Swoopes or when Gray was in the game.

Gray's ability to make people miss is going to be essential if the OL can't open big creases in the middle. He looked phenomenal.

Otherwise, you hope the actual season sees a lot more QB Power/Counter calls to punish the interior lanes with Swoopes and Heard.

-Neither passing performance was amazing when you consider that the team's two best corners in the spring were both out and that the "depth" at the unit included numerous walk-ons. However, neither was awful either.

Heard took a ton of sacks and will be curious to see if it was him trying to do too much and failing to see the field or just a porous OL in front of him. My guess is a little of both. He's a young guy trying to make an impression, nothing worrying here just an indicator of where growth is needed.

-Both QBs looked really quick. Tell me Swoopes didn't look dangerous on his TD run on the first drive. And Heard....he's everything we hoped he would be in this regard.

If Swoopes wins the 1st string job, which seems likely based on his superior grasp of the passing game and Charlie's preference to have a veteran there, they should develop a 4th phase that features Heard.

-Daje was disappointing, mostly because he didn't get a ton of touches and he had the fumble and muffed punt but...

-Malik's tackle/strip on Daje was an amazing thing. The number of inside linebackers who can diagnose that play and then have the speed to run down a player like Daje from behind and pop them like that? There aren't many.

Freeman's ensuing scoop and score was pretty amazing as well. Those two need to grind in the film room this summer and win jobs from Cole and Jinkens (who seemed okay) because they set a different ceiling for this defense.

-Overall the offense was worse than I expected and the defense was better. These coaches really know how to coach defense, that much is obvious. Offense always takes longer, but it will be concerning if they can't take a serious leap forward next season.

-Dorian Leonard was a disappointment in this game. Lorenzo Joe looked like the real heir apparent to John Harris.

The only thing concerning about that spring game was the lack of depth. Still need a couple of classes to look like a talented football team. Holes in the roster dictated most of what we saw. Million times better than last spring, but man, so far away from the spring games early in Mack's era.

Mondays in the Humidor with the Big Cigar

By: Jesus Shuttlesworth

In this edition of Mondays in the Humidor with the Big Cigar, we’ll talk about the Spring game and what coaches and players thought about the Saturday showcase.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Let’s start things out by simply getting the format of the Spring game and how that should factor into everyone’s thinking at this point. In other words, how much stock should folks put into what happened this past Saturday?

Big Cigar: I would caution people to not put too much stock into scheme, play-calling, quarterback play, etc. Going into this game, and I think the staff would agree, the plan is always to play vanilla and avoid injuries as much as you can. They’d be the first to tell you that the offense didn’t do very much to surprise the defense, and certainly defensively, coach Bedford wasn’t anywhere near as exotic as he would be in a real game or has been in private scrimmage work. So if you’re watching the game and say to yourself, 'oh that’s what Texas will run this year on both sides of the ball', then you’re fooling yourself. Then from that premise, go ahead and evaluate things like quarterback play, running back rotations, etc. and so forth. That wasn’t the Texas offense and it certainly wasn’t the extent of the Texas defense.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: So what do you take away from the scrimmage if scheme is pretty much out the window?

Big Cigar: Obviously blocking and tackling is what you want to evaluate regardless if the scheme is vanilla or complicated. I’ve seen a lot of practices so I wasn’t surprised by this, but your readers probably saw a team on both sides of the ball that is much more physical and violent. Those types of things are real and will translate once the lights come on this coming season. They’ve worked hard on being a much more physical football team and I think Saturday showed great progress in that department.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: You mentioned evaluating quarterbacks, running backs, and skilled guys and not to put too much stock in these things with the Spring game, but all that said, what are your thoughts here regardless?

Big Cigar: With quarterbacks, decision-making is always paramount regardless of scheme so you can be objective in criticizing where the QBs are going with the football. I thought both quarterbacks did okay here, but each kid had some head scratching throws. I think both got away with poor decisions and that was probably the most disconcerting part of the scrimmage for me because the defense wasn’t doing anything fancy. By the same token, the offense was pretty vanilla so neither player was able to utilize the full capacity of the playbook. That’s I guess the silver lining for me.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: What about the rest of the skill guys, how do you evaluate them?

Big Cigar: You evaluate them individually I would think and that even goes back to an athletic guy like Heard. It doesn’t matter what offense you’re running or how basic it is, Jerrod Heard’s burst had to jump out to your readership who haven’t had the benefit of watching practice. Warrick is another kid that had to jump out at folks and frankly I don’t think Texas loses anything from a playmaking standpoint when Warrick is in there instead of Daje Johnson. Warrick has had that kind of spring and made improvement. Those two kids, Heard and Warrick, really should have turned some heads on Saturday.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Anybody else?

Big Cigar: He’s not a skill guy but I think everyone saw Malik Jefferson’s burst and what makes him such a special young player. True freshmen don’t come out of a blitz and lay the hammer to a back on a screen pass. That type of suddenness you just can’t teach. If you take nothing else away from the game, you have to be impressed with Jefferson’s potential. And the kid has the type of demeanor that only means he’ll get better and better.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: So where would you caution fans where not to be putting too much stock in things?

Big Cigar: Besides the quarterback competition, I think those people who have anointed one running back over another on the depth chart or one receiver over another based on one game may be missing the boat. I wouldn’t bury Duke Catalon or Dorian Leonard just yet, because both players have had really good springs and neither played particularly well in this game. The coaches are going to take the totality of the spring and then obviously summer workouts will come into play before fall camp begins. Foreman gives them another big back option and Joe showed a burst on Saturday, but nobody won or lost a job on this weekend so folks should temper things. That says nothing of the fact that freshmen like Chris Warren will have a say in snap allocation before things are all said and done.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: That’s solid background. Let’s switch gears to what the coaching staff is saying about not only the Spring game but Spring practice. What’s their biggest takeaways on both fronts that you’ve heard?

Big Cigar: On the positive side of the ledger the success with tempo this spring has and is being talked about as one of the biggest strides. The offensive coaching staff is pleased with the progress here especially with how it relates to going to more spread based concepts. Kids are still making slight mistakes in getting lined up but overall the tempo portion of the offensive game has been a great success if you ask the staff.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Is that just reps or something else?

Big Cigar: Sure, it’s reps, but a lot of it is the growing confidence in the offensive line. They’re improved play and certainly depth has allowed the coaches to go all-in on not only going to more of a spread, but trying to get as many offensive snaps as possible. You can’t do that if your offensive line is a turn-style because it’s a good way to gas your defense and get your ass beat by 30.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: What else is being talked about this Monday?

Big Cigar: There’s still an open quarterback competition even though Swoopes is still considered the leader at this point. Kai Locksley, surprisingly, is still being mentioned as a guy who can make some noise here, so it truly seems to be all hands on deck as we go into the summer. I mean I don’t buy it because I think you have to redshirt Kai if he’s going to play quarterback, but I was surprised to hear his name mentioned today. In fact, one of the biggest conversation pieces today was how many jobs are still up for grabs for the freshmen to get especially in the secondary. They were not happy with how the secondary played on Saturday.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: What happened there? It seemed like they played alright.

Big Cigar: Coach Bedford was not happy with how the kids lined up and how his personnel packages got in and out of the game. Don’t be surprised if that position group is doing some extra work as punishment. On the flip side, the defensive coaches were pleased with how the defensive line played as a unit especially the guys providing depth. That was the main bright spot on defense. Also there were comments on how Jefferson and Edwin Freeman just went out and had fun and played with their hair on fire. This type of play is something that coaches are encouraging the kids to do, to the extent they can get lined up correctly because the quickest way to piss off Bedford is to not get lined up right.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Great stuff. Anything on offense?

Big Cigar: Again, they like the trend line their offensive line is on. They like how the kids are taking to the new offense and the up-tempo stuff, and I think they like their depth at the running back position with the addition of Warren. They’ve got a bell cow in Gray and three other kids who can run downhill. At receiver, they have skill and they have some depth with the emergence of Warrick inside. Marcus Johnson with the torn meniscus is a setback, but finally you have big bodies outside emerging with Leonard and Joe and some guys with playmaking ability inside with Warrick and Foreman. The story here revolves around the quarterback position and that’s the big question on everyone’s mind.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: To end on a controversial note, how would you handicap that race?

Big Cigar: I think Swoopes still has the lead but Heard is starting to get on the steep part of the learning curve as most redshirt freshmen want to do at this point in their careers. What benefits Heard is that he’s already the more explosive athlete so he’ll play regardless as I’ve always said. He’ll get in on some zone read packages and he’ll play a handful of drives every game even if Swoopes wins the job. Heard’s challenge now is to take command of more of the offense to a point where the coaches have a decision to make. I don’t think Jerrod can run as much of the playbook as Swoopes currently, but there’s no reason come August camp that he can’t. If Heard is even comparable here, then I think you have to go with the best athlete. That’s how I’d handicap it.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Thanks.

Big Cigar: You bet.

Damn I feel like I'm the only one who thinks the defense wont have much of a drop off, and the offense produces, I see us at 8-4 with the possibility of winning the bowl game

For those of you that don't know it (joking), there have been a couple of things that have delayed facilities in general.
First, we just changed the basketball staff. And for the people involved, that is no small matter.
Second, the BOR just got two new members, and we are approving a new president, and Wallace Hall is pulling his usual crap and wasting time and resources (i say this b/c if you want admissions reform, the facts are known, and changes rest with the legislature, not with him)

Anyhow:
1. They are getting close to finalizing a site for Tennis. Discussions have begun again, but I won't leak the site. I will let Patterson announce it when he is ready. Its behind where I thought it would be, as they have not picked an architect. But, considering tennis is simple, I assume they can get this whipped up quick.
2. I really think that the basketball arena will go on campus. I don't think it will be 10k like storrs. When the city of Austin hires its consultants, they will understand why they need to participate. Everyone is saying its by Mike Myers stadium. the bummer is that we are going to have to build a zillion parking garages.
3. There could be a shot to modify the medical center and renovate the erwin center. I think that McRaven and Fenves might allow themselves to be pushed to consider it. One of Dell's closest friends said that Dell would listen for sure. I think if we could get the new medical school dean to consider it, we might have a shot. This is what I want, but I am a financial guy, and I don't like UT losing money on athletics.
4. We are hearing an August BOR meeting will approve the SEZ. Fundraising starts then
5. I have not seen renderings. Everything gets torn down and rebuilt. They are starting to look at adjacent buildings. It would be awfully good to know what happens to Erwin center so you can be integrated. Unclear if timing will work or not.
6. Sounds like 3 years of construction. Will be done in phases. You have to go to DKR and walk around to imagine how massive the job will be.
7. Longhorn foundation at 13.5k members, looking to get to 15k. Please join if you are not a member.

  1. 10 of the top 17 Texas offers are OOS and it looks like we're going to see a few more coming out soon particularly on defense.

A few other notes of interest (no shockers really here):

Watson is absolutely thrilled with Heard's work ethic and development. Thinks very highly of the way he's worked and loves his ability to create out of the pocket. Heard will play no matter who's named the starter for the ND game. Very good sign for Heard future at Texas.

Biggest concerns for Texas right now? depth on defense. Love the way the offense is building depth. Not so much on defense. Lots of opportunities for the young kids coming in obviously. Depending on several to make an impact.

Thinks this staff collectively are an outstanding group of recruiters. Thrilled with Jay and Jeff and what they've done thus far. Both will be huge assets in recruiting the state. Love the way the 2016 class has started and feel good about it being even better than last year's. High school coaches are really responding to what Texas has cooking right now with the new staff members. Texas feels it legitimately has 4-5 top recruiters on the staff.

A few months ago I posted that there was some smoke that one of the assistant coaches wasn't exactly happy and may be looking to leave. Looks like everything got settled at least for now. Chalk it up to a bad season?

I should have a more details on recruiting coming up over the next week or so hopefully. hearing a few bigtime national kids will be coming in this summer. Brick making some noise as a recruiter nationally.
