Tom Herman’s coaching staff at the University of Texas is taking shape. According to sources, Herman is bringing Houston assistant coaches Oscar Giles (defensive line), Craig Naivar (co-defensive coordinator/safeties), Jason Washington (corners/special teams), Corby Meekins (tight ends/fullbacks) and Derek Warehime (offensive line) with him to Austin.

The coordinator positions aren’t set yet and won't be expected to for a while. Sources said Herman is waiting on Houston to hire a head coach before engaging with interim Houston coach Todd Orlando (defensive coordinator) and Cougar offensive coordinator Major Applewhite. Both are considered prime candidates for the Houston head coaching job.

Sources also said that Herman’s support staff is taking shape. The two linchpins of Herman’s off-field staff Houston – strength coach Yancy McKnight and director of football operations Fernando Lovo – will be joining him there. Both were among his original staff hires at Houston. Director of Player Personnel Derek Chang, who worked for a year at Houston, will also make the move to Austin.

The rest of Herman’s staff will fill out over the upcoming days and weeks. Houston receivers coach Darrell Wyatt, running backs coach Kenith Pope and other support staff remain a possibility but couldn’t be confirmed.
While at Houston, Herman built the program as a scaled down version of Ohio State. The model is expected to be re-created on a larger scale at Texas. A key tenant of Herman’s Houston staff was experience recruiting the state of Texas. The five coaches Sports Illustrated has confirmed are going with him all have extensive experience in the state.

Anybody know anything about S&C coach Yancy Mcknight? Is he well regarded? We need a strength and conditioning coach who can make some animals in the weight room.

:yeshrug: I told y'all about Applewhite not being welcomed here, none of the current coaches being retained, and the extension Aranda was going to get. We are still going to make him say no, though.

I'm almost ready to call it on Brewster, I've heard some very positive things.

Nahlin keeps going back & forth on Major Applewhite. His last update on Applewhite was that Herman will wait to see what UofH does with the HC. So it looks like, if Applewhite doesn't get the Head Coach job at UH, he'll be Herman's OC at UT.

Applewhite ain't coming regardless as to what UofH does, this is kind of out of Hermans hands, he would have to stand on a table and give an ultimatum to get Major here.

Our first Inside Scoop of the Tom Herman era should be a good one.

TEAM MEETING

By: Eric Nahlin

We've heard the meeting was mostly no-nonsense, which isn't unlike Strong's initial, "you just got a good staff fired" discussion in his first team meeting. In fact it was a bit contentious at times and it was relayed they're going to have the toughest Spring of their lives.

Feelings after were quite mixed. The guys are still in shock of Strong actually leaving, and then Herman comes in like Yosemite Sam, guns a blazin'.

I think it's still a very emotional time for the team, so I'm taking much of what I've heard regarding player reactions with a grain of salt, but some are already wondering if they can play for Herman.

Like a Houston insider told me, there's going to be transfers.

HERMAN MEYER

Let's stick with that same source. He knows the University of Houston extremely well, but he also knows the whole regional landscape, including Texas. Yesterday this gentleman called me up and painted a very resolute picture of Tom Herman and his program. The talk was so good I'm going to try and get him on here for an anonymous Q&A.

I'll hit the big points:

*These are not exact quotes but they're close and the substance is exact. I was having trouble keeping up with notes. This guy can talk.

Organization: Herman is extremely detail oriented and runs a tight ship. He's hard to work for. But this organization helps stream-line the entire program. Upon arrival at UofH, he had a parents only meeting in which he handed out packets with explanations of his expectations for his players. This had much more to do with off-the-field actions. Everyone knows where he stands on everything from employees, to players, to parents. Everyone is held accountable. He'll put all of his people in places.

Personality: At Texas, you could tell Strong was close to his players and he had an open door policy. Herman is more like Urban Meyer where if the coach is talking to you it's probably not good. He had a good relationship with the team, but not necessarily players. You're not just going to walk into his office and shoot the s*** like you could with Strong.

Team mentality/toughness: His culture is all about toughness. These guys will never work as hard as they're going to in the spring. Practices are going to be physical. Real physical. That's where the confidence comes from. Practices are so tough and they're tired of hitting each other they can't wait to play and hit someone else and it shows. There's a downside, though, and his teams at Houston tended to get beat up. At Houston that hurts because you don't have a lot of depth.......He loves tough players. On plane rides the offensive line sits at the front of plane and not just the starters. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team all that front because, as Herman says, "I only sit with tough guys."

Buy-in: There are going to be transfers. I don't know who, but there will be transfers and some of them will be good players. Herman won't care because he has to put his culture in place. A guy I'll be wondering about is Kris Boyd. Boyd represents everything Herman loves and hates. Kris will have to put forth the type of effort off the field he does on game day.

Quarterback: He should bring Kyle Allen. He'd be ready to go day-1, he already knows the offense. [I stated he doesn't run well] He runs much better than you think, and he's willing too. They got that Arizona/A&M diva out of him the second he hit campus. I don't see Buechele as a fit. They like to run the ball at the position and he's just not built for it. He can do the passing aspects but he'll get killed as a runner. Don't get me wrong, Buechele is good, but I think it will be someone else. [those were his words, not mine]

Misc. Details: You'll start seeing the players walking around with gallons of water. Tom hates soft tissue injuries.

I bet you'll see movement on improving facilities quickly. It happened at Houston and I bet he had it built into his contract at Texas. Texas' aren't the worst or all that bad, but they should always be some of the best in the country.

Ball security is a big deal to him. If you fumble or drop the ball, you're not going to play, it's as simple as that. That's why I'm worried about Armanti Foreman and John Burt. D'Onta wouldn't have gotten 2,000 yards this year because he would have sat after some fumbles. Look how Duke Catalon carries the ball -- high and tight.

Herman LOVES special teams. It's his baby. He sees it as a phase of the game that's a guaranteed win no matter who they play. You'll see a lot of fakes. He's not afraid to call fakes because they rep them so much. When was the last time Texas had good special teams? How many games has poor special teams cost Texas? Those days are gone, I'm telling you.

And finally: Texas is going to win. I guarantee you Texas will win.

This source spent zero time talking about Herman being likeable or anything of the sort, and it's apparent he knows him well. Texas hired Urban Meyer Jr. (from an operational, philosophical standpoint) four years after it could have hired Sr.

MOST LIKELY STAFF

DC/LB, Todd Orlando: One way to keep your staff together to coach a bowl game is to interview the two coordinators for the HC job. Houston will do just that with Orlando and Major Applewhite. Both are competing for the same job and others on the staff are working hard in case one of Orlando/Applewhite gets the job.

OC/QB, Major Applewhite: Because of the bowl game and UofH hiring process Herman likely won't have resolution with his full staff for a few weeks. I have Applewhite most likely for OC, and yes I've heard the constant speculation he's not allowed back but that's counter to what I've heard.

WR, Darrell Wyatt or other: No idea here. Wyatt could be contingent on what happens with Tim Brewster. I don't have a good feel for how that's going to shake out, other than we know Brewster is in play. Wyatt makes sense as a DFW recruiter.

RB, going to keep this off-line for now (sorry, been asked to): Interesting pick, with recruiting skins. 8.5/10 on the excitement meter.

TE, Corby Meekins: This is Hermans' Traylor and we beat that topic to death yesterday. Brewster is a long-term TE's coach but we think he'd be 'titled up' in order to pay him his recruiting value.

OL, Derek Warehime: Good coach, an up-and-comer. Has OC upside from what I've heard. He needs to get to work quick with no OL commits on the board. Fortunately he has three very good (relative to Houston) OL committed to Houston, so back-up plans are there.

DL, Oscar Giles: Native son returns home. Very likeable guy and he's in Austin already hitting the phones having talked to Taquon Graham yesterday, "you're going to be the first guy I see on my way out, and the last guy I see on my way in." Look at OG go. I like it.

S, Craig Naivar: The first D-1 coach to believe in Herman is being rewarded with the chance to follow Herman to Texas. I've heard great things about Naivar and have met him a few times at high schools. Good ol boy who's going to recruit well, and has extensive defensive experience including the coordinator level. If either Orlando or Applewhite get Houston you have to wonder if Naivar is asked to remain as Houston's DC.

CB, Jason Washington: Has helped put some guys in the NFL and helped build up another one, Desoto's Howard Wilson, into a future NFL pick. He's already in Austin and calling recruits. I'd put him in Dallas and simply have him recruit Clay Mack players (as well as any elites elsewhere in the state).

If this staff finishes its build-out with Brewster, Applewhite, and that unnamed RB's coach, it will have some recruiting hammers, and the other guys aren't slouches either.

I'll have a lot on recruiting either today or tomorrow a.m. I want to get Scoop posted.

One note I'll leave you with: Toneil Carter is in play from what I hear. The Langham Creek RB is committed to Georgia and is a close approximation to last year's Devwah Whaley (Beaumont Central, Arkansas).

HERMAN TEAM INTRO

By: Justin Wells

New Texas coach Tom Herman wanted to meet with his new team before he was introduced at his press conference on Sunday evening. It was important for his guys to see his face and hear his voice before he walked onto the national stage of college football.

Here are a few notes from his first team meeting with his new players.

- He basically said this offseason is going to be the hardest thing they'll ever do in their life. They're going to be the most mentally and physically tough team in the nation, and they're going to win a championship in the next couple of years.

- He called out three people for slouching in their chair. He said every person on the roster will be drug tested the day they get back from the break.

- The players can't leave Austin unless they tell him specifically. His practices are run like a military camp. He said if someone gets caught for weed, that he's gonna call them out in front of everyone and basically verbally rip them to shreds.

With every new regime comes change. Some kids, and adults, don't welcome change, so don't freak out when a couple may request a transfer within the next few weeks. It's all part of the process.

But the feeling we get was that most of the players are completely on board. Almost every member of the team went up to Herman afterwards and introduced themselves to Tom and a few of his new coaches.

That's called a great start on a new journey.

SAM EHLINGER

For UT's Class of 2017, it begins and ends with Westlake signal-caller, Sam Ehlinger. And he knows it. When the ring-leader is completely behind new coach Tom Herman - the former UH coach who boasted a 22-4 mark in two seasons on Cullen Blvd - the new coach has secured his top pledge to this point.

"Coach Herman is the future face of College Football," said Ehlinger. "He will turn the program around and get it where needs to be."

I think it would be very Mensa of Tom to attend Westlake/LT on Friday. I said it would be VERY MENSA of Tom to attend Westlake/LT on Friday. I'll be there. I bet I'm not the only one.

JOSH THOMPSON

The 6-foot-0, 192-pound Nacogdoches DB, Josh Thompson, who had longed dreamed of a Texas offer was a big fan of Charlie Strong and Jeff Traylor. I mean, they gave him his shot. But he also knows this is a business.

"I'm hyped about the new coaches," said Thompson. "I think everything is about to go in the right direction. Coach Herman was made for this job. I'm even more excited to get there in June."

Do you still talk to your ETX brethren?

"Oh yeah," Thompson said. "Brandon (Jones) all the time. Kris (Boyd), Demarco (Boyd), all my boys. I'm also in Damion Miller's (2017 WR commit for UT) ear too. We're keeping him."

It was Josh's dream to play at Texas. When he committed after a stellar showing at The Opening in Oregon, his confidence went through the roof.

"My dad told me I'm a different player after I committed to Texas," said Josh. "It's like I now know I belong."

You certainly do, big dog.

MONTRELL ESTELL

My man, Montrell Estell is a man of few words. He loves family, football, and fishing, in that order. I caught up with Estell over the weekend about his thoughts on Tom Herman and his chances of sticking with UT.

"I heard he's a great coach," said Estell." So I really can't complain about that. Looking forward to what he brings. Texas is still Texas."

The 4-star safety commit from Hooks looks good at this point, and even when the talk of Strong being removed built up over the last few months, Estell never wavered in his desire to become a future member of DBU.

Alabama, A&M, and Ole Miss still contact him, but I think this one stays put for 2017's squad.

JOSHUA MOORE

One of the state's top prospects for 2018 hollered at me yesterday for a few tidbits on UT's next taskmaster.

"Herman is the truth," said Moore, the 4-star ATH from Yoakum. "I believe he's gonna make a change at Texas and it'll be (insert fire emoji)."

What does Moore want to see from the new offense Herman will be bringing to Austin?

"Nothing honestly, I loved the way he ran his offense at UofH and if he keeps doing it, I believe he'll pick up some big-time recruits."

Moore is one of the hottest recruits in the nation. He holds 40+ offers including Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, and Florida State.

His twin brother, Jordan, is also a fan. He's supposed to announce on December 24th, with Texas being the slight leader.

It's no secret these kids love Austin. We've broken down many times. Mother is a UT grad, dad is a Longhorn fan, they've visited Austin more times than Nahlin vacations at Lake Tahoe.

Just knowing Joshua is a big fan of Herman is the biggest factor here. Produce in 2017 and the 2018s will come calling.

BRYSON SMITH

Possibly the top prospect on Houston's commitment list is a dual-threat, multi-talented, record-holding hoss named Bryson Smith. The 6-foot-0, 185-pound quarterback from East Texas is a known commodity in recruiting circles and one of the most underrated footballers in Texas. He also holds records at the football factory known as John Tyler HS.

Take a peek: 384-of-625 passing, 5,862 yards and 54 TDs in the air; 3,182 yards rushing on 379 carries (school record), 45 TDs. Not bad for a two-year starter that jumped from 5A to 6A without skipping a beat.

Smith is as big a fan of Tom Herman as anyone.

"I love coach Herman," said Smith. "He's also a genius, and as hard-working as it gets."

His head coach at JT, Ricklan Holmes, knows talent when he sees it. The former Oklahoma State DB and New England Patriots CB has seen his fair share of studs.

"He commands the offense," JT head Coach Holmes told me this summer. "He commands the huddle, a lot like Greg Ward (UH QB and former Cujo Lion). He demands the respect, like Greg. So naturally you can see a lot of Greg in Bryson."

That comparison is almost unjust. While Ward is a great athlete and one of the winningest QBs in Houston history, Smith is another level athletically. Seeing him doing a 360 dunk during a HS basketball game last winter was all I needed to witness.

Will Herman pursue another QB in UT's Class of 2017? Not just any QB. I don't think Kyle Allen is going to happen, but I can very much see Texas coming after Smith in the next few weeks.

If you get Ehlinger and Smith with Shane Buechele already on campus, the UT offense just got more potent. You also ensure the best deep-ball threat in Texas, Damion Miller, inks with the Horns on NSD.
