After that scrimmage, I think I'm ready for basketball. Looks like we can hit threes and seem a lot more athletic overall. Young and Jones look like they will be fun to watch. The most sad thing is that Otsekowski kid might be the best player on the team but has to sit out this year.

IT just put out this piece:
Fridays in the Humidor - 10/21/16

By: IT Staff

TEAM

Kansas State is the perfect game coming off of the Iowa State win. This is of course a difficult test, but they all are at this point. Not only have road trips given Texas trouble, now UT faces its mirror opposite; a disciplined and low-octane team. Styles make fights. Texas better know it's in a fight.

To that end, the coaches have ridden the linebackers hard this week about coming downhill. In Strong's most recent press conference he defended his linebackers stating offenses operate in zone and move sideways often, thus you rarely have lead blockers. He was telling his linebackers no such thing in practice this week. It's time to get physical.

Much has been made of Jeffrey McCulloch's strong showing. Not only did he play well -- it was lowly Iowa State after all -- but he showed traits that transfer regardless of competition. He'll be rewarded this week with even more playing time. He's still a linebacker, but he'll see time on the field at Fox in a situational package. The staff is energetic regarding him.

The defense will bounce between 3-4 and the basic nickel look we saw last week. Surprisingly I didn't hear much about a 4-man front but you shouldn't rule that out versus the run-centric Wildcats.

The secondary will remain the same starting five as last week. You can't not reward that group for its recent play. That makes it Bonney-Hall-Haines-Locke-Boyd.

Offensively the staff is loving the wide receivers. The receivers work hard and produce. Expect John Burt to be worked back into the flow of the offense. Burt's a team favorite because of his demeanor and work ethic. Teammates and coaches have spent a lot of time building his confidence back up. If he plays to his expected level this is simply one of the best receiver groupings in the country. It may be already.

I still have not heard of any wrinkles being added to the Swoopes package and specifically it doesn't seem like anything new was repped. Since he's a quarterback I guess that can always be changed quickly, but it seems as if the staff is a bit stubborn here.

Some good news, Brandon Hodges is expected back in the starting line-up. Tristan Nickelson is a max-effort guy but he's limited due to his height to flexibility ratio. Some not so good news, Shack isn’t 100 percent but should start, so don’t be surprised if Jake McMillon gets some snaps. This is the best OL Texas can field right now: Williams-Vahe-Shack-Perkins-Hodges. Restored health here is big going into what should be the most physical game of the year.

I asked about Kirk Johnson since he was brought up. He's pretty healthy but they're going to keep him on the shelf at this point. That's the prudent move.

I also asked a few sources on what the response would be from the players if Strong was removed. Unanimously the response was essentially, "there would be faith in Texas making a great hire." The notion there would be a mass exodus of "Strong's players" is fantasy, so let's nip that in the bud. The players love Charlie. Just like many players love their coach. The players also love and play for each other. They're not going to quit on each other. That's the extent of that.

OFFENSIVE LOOKS
I caught up with a pair of former staffers at Houston and Baylor this week to get their takes on the Texas offense at the midway point in 2016. Both like what they see from Sterlin Gilbert, Matt Mattox, and the rest of the Longhorns offensive contingent. But both admitted, this is only a piece of the full Veer & Shoot scheme.

"There are two staples I'm not seeing from Texas yet," said one college coach, who runs this offense at a major university. "The Power Read and the SS Blue Jet Motion. Those two formations are the money makers in the V&S."

The Power Read is a great play for your QB. It takes minimal effort and is predicated on basically two reads; what the defense's DE and deep safety does. It's a running play for your QB where he just has to run downhill in the A or B gap. It's similar to the zone read but the RB runs wide to the outside and the QB reads the DE to know whether to hand off or pull it down and run behind a pulling guard. It can be run with just one read or it can be more.

"You run this to basically set-up two things; your QB or RB gets a free lane past the line of scrimmage, and when the safety creeps into the box too much, and he will, you've got the slant or vertical for your WR on the outside, if you want it."

They both think Jerrod Heard could be special in this set with an empty backfield. "If Heard could make 2-3 throws in the offense, how do you stop that? He keeps it a few times, brings the safeties in and makes the DE's react rather than act, you've got the defense off balance and reeling."

The SS Blue Jet Motion is used to find the weak spot in the defense's secondary. It starts Trips Right, Tight Slot Left. You motion one of the receivers out of trips to see what the DB is going to do, and hopefully isolate your other WR on the outside.

"If the defender follows your motion guy, the other WR has a 1-on-1 with his man," another coach who played and coached in this system remarked. "That WR now has three options - curl, slant, or vertical. If the safety gets too close to the box, it's a vertical and often a win for your pass catcher. Either way, that motion is key."

Both coaches say there are two things they're not seeing much of from UT's version of the Veer & Shoot: motion and tempo.

Texas is running between 80-90 plays a game, but the tempo is still not where it needs to be. They think it's a lack of personnel and experience. It takes years for the offense to gel and learn how to properly read the defense. Both think Strong being a defensive guy prefers a slower version of this style to keep his defense off the field more.

They also think if Strong stays at Texas, and allows Gilbert to continue to implement this schemes, the Horns will build a monster. This is the elementary version of Briles' patent scoring system. But if you give Shane Buechele and the UT offense more reps, allow the more motion to see what the defense is giving you, and continue to plug in high quality athletes, the sky is the limit for the Longhorns.

Texas is 16th in the S&P nationally on offense and 37th overall. If the defense continues its simplification of formations and calls, that number will only improve.

They both think the more they open up this offense to motion and personnel, the better it will be. They both see Buechele being a real weapon in this offense. But they think 2017 QB commit, Sam Ehlinger, could be the real benefactor.

"For Ehlinger's attributes and size, he could set records in the Veer & Shoot," said both coaches. "It's only six games in. Give it two years and the Texas offense will be special. Not could be. Will be."

NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND

A couple interesting recruiting notes that directly affect the Longhorns.

With the state's top WR, Waxahachie's Jalen Reagor, flipping from OU to TCU last night, some might think his recruitment is complete. It is Reagor's third commitment - Tech, OU, and now TCU – but according to a source close to Reagor's recruitment, it might not be over just yet.

"I think he'll still visit other schools," said the source. "But he really likes the TCU coaches, the proximity to his home, and close friend and teammate, Kennedy Snell is a future Frog."

Does Texas still have a shot?

"Charlie Strong's future is a major factor here. But it's just October."

He might have one more flip in him. That would make Jordan Elliott's recruitment look rational.

Another noteworthy tidbit is PA Memorial's 4-star DB, Kary Vincent, who could be the best corner in Texas, will be unofficially visiting UT next weekend for the Baylor game. The LSU commit remains solid to the Tigers, but isn't counting any schools out, namely Texas and Ohio State.

Unlike the Reagors, Vincent isn't bothered by the instability of Strong's job in Austin. Texas has maintained close tabs on Vincent since before his record-setting performance at the Texas State Track Meet last May. He's built good relationships with Vance Bedford, Clay Jennings, but hears from Strong more than the rest. When Charlie is making you a priority, all bets are off.

If Charlie is going to put the fate of his job on the shoulders of John fukking Bonney then so be it. This is the type of stupid shyt people point out when they complain about Charlie's decision making. Bonney is god awful, on that last TD play as a CB you give up everything except inside because you have no help there. Make the QB make that pass into the corner of the endzone. It's not that fukking hard. I could have covered that route. fukk! Hill or Davis will need to replace Bonney or KSU will attack there all day.

Alright, guess it's time to contact Herman. I thought Strong would win this game. Our tackling is pathetic. Malik looks like he's regressed. Something ain't right, and that falls on Strong.

Defense did well enough, especially in the second half to win this game. Offense shyt the bed. Sterlin for some reason tightens up after turnovers. 3 points in the second half, defense forced 3 TOs we should have won this game.

Not sure what is up with Malik but he is disinterested in playing football. Either running himself out of plays are right into blocks.
