True but to @saysumthinfunnymike pointed out, Disney and marvel were well aware that stuff was out there when they hired him. He apologized before they started shooting the first guardians movie. That’s kinda on them at that point
That's just speculation that they knew. People assume movie studios to background checks for directors for some reason and not go by resume and connections. Gunn was hired a couple of months before the superhero stuff that upset the gay community that he posted on his blog was uncovered. The stuff he posted was in poor taste but not on the same level as the tweets from the recent controversy that cost him his job.

James Gunn’s Suicide Squad 2 Is A COMPLETELY Fresh Take On The Series

DC confirms that James Gunn is not only writing the script for Suicide Squad 2 but is also working on an entirely new version of the story. It's been over two years since David Ayer's first Suicide Squad movie hit theaters, and yet Warner Bros. Pictures appears to be no closer to putting the sequel into production. After spending some time in development, Suicide Squad 2 appeared to be moving forward when The Accountant's Gavin O'Connor was brought on to write and direct the sequel late last year.

O'Connor, along with screenwriters Todd Stashwick and David Bar Katz, have been hard at work on developing the story and screenplay for Suicide Squad 2, which was only recently turned into WB. Unfortunately, for them, the studio decided to move forward with Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey instead, which apparently has an identical story to their version of Suicide Squad 2. And so, with O'Connor having exited the sequel, WB is going back to square one with Gunn now writing the script and potentially eyeing the director's chair.

In addition to confirming that James Gunn is writing Suicide Squad 2, today's episode of DC Daily also revealed that the filmmaker is bringing "a completely fresh take to the franchise." Although it's been reported that Gunn is working on a new version of the story, the fact that DC mentions this is a fresh take on the series itself is particularly interesting.

Since DC refers to Gunn's movie as Suicide Squad 2, it's clear that he's still developing the sequel to Ayer's first movie, so "fresh take" could be referring to two things here: one, that Gunn is doing a full rewrite of the movie's story and script, and - two - that he's potentially taking the characters in an entirely different direction than how they were depicted in the original film, which may not be a bad thing if WB wants to continue to distance themselves from the earlier installments in the DCEU.

At the moment, Gunn appears to only be writing the script for Suicide Squad 2, though it's been reported that he's also being eyed to possibly direct. In most cases, filmmakers like Gunn who've helmed blockbuster movies before would be inclined to direct movies they've written before, but in his case, he has some experience scripting films for other directors. So it's entirely possible that he may not want to take on the reins as director this time around, especially given the fact that he's coming off of being fired by Disney from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Hope they don't recast anyone and just use new characters instead.

I am dying at WB being so over the place that two writers working on separate movies within the same universe ended up writing "identical" stories. :russ:

I don't know what they're planning but they might want to consider using this sequel to set up the Secret Six (from Simone's run) to have SS vs SS face-off in the threequel.

WTF????? This is an awesome fukking move for WB. They're not Disney. They don't have to worry about that family friendly bullshyt. They could make Suicide Squad either an hard PG-13 or even R. They can go low budget and pull out something along the quality of Deadpool or Deadpool 2 and make a ton of money. They can say that, "Well, Suicide Squad isn't meant to be family entertainment." Which is exactly what all the MCU haters hate about Marvel. Even the non haters say that they want more properties that are for adults. They can turn around and say that they believe that James Gunn has changed and he's not what he was 10 years ago. That they believe in him and believe in redemption. Gunn can then go and put out a movie that knocks peoples socks off, and no one will be talking about what he posted on twitter a decade ago.
Or cops find kiddie porn on his computer between now and the video release for the movie and WB has a PR nightmare on its hands.

No, what happened is Margot took the story for SS2. They didn't "end up" with same stories. She took it for her own movie.

People in here keep saying that, but there hasn’t really been any solid conclusive evidence proving that other than “you’re an idiot, of course they knew, cuz their Disney” “They are a billion dollar company blah blah blah...”

I even tried to google “Did Disney know of Gunn’s twitter/jokes before?” And nothing came up.

NOTHING!!!

I mean damn, do I need to BING it or use Yahoo search, excite search, aol search, or Netscape?

So it’s feeling like that’s kinda “speculative” and someone like us on the internet that doesn’t work for or near Disney, who was in the comments sections of a blog said “of course they knew” with no evidence and everyone ran with that soundbite or hot take.

I honestly don’t know if they did or didn’t know, but I’m not gonna pretend to undeniably know or assume. And you can’t just go off assumptions.

It would be nice if someone can provide something to hands down or concrete to support that argument.

If they haven’t found it already then they’re not going to. As hard candy isn’t on the computers of a lot of people in Hollywood anyway.
