What would it take for soccer to become popular in the African American community?

Winners and for a Black man FROM the cities to do it. Josy is ok, but he's wildly inconsistent and he isn't visible enough. We need cats FROM LA, Atlanta, Huston, Chicago, Detroit ect to get involved with the team and then bring the game back.

Also Nike and US Soccer need to fund the camps and programs in the cities. There are kids with the skill sets to play the game everywhere, but they have no access to proper goals, fields ect.

Lastly, it needs to be cool. This was one of the best things the NFL did and the NBA did in the 90's and their media revolutions and where the Selig administration failed in the MLB. Football and Basketball are games that had celebrity players, in fact after boxing, Basketball and Football EMBRACED the celebrity/player. We have no visible superstars in the MLS, Dempsey is the closest we have and he is helping. It's also partly why Donovan for as good as he was was never a good ambassador for the game in the states. He's tragically swagless. Cats like Beckham Thierry Henry, and now David Villa and Kaka are legends in their respective countries, but it was and its silly to expect them to be totally vested in America's growth of the game.

In other words, US Soccer needs a Lebron/Kobe type. That one electrifying player both on an off the field who can rock the pitch and the press conference thats what it needs to become a true contender to the big 3.

Interesting comment re: a American Superstar player needed.

World class attacking footballers are rarely created in a vacuum. Even a Zlatan or Gareth Bale spring to mind however.

Doesn't need to be an attacker per se. Just a guy who comes up big time and is a personality. That's part of why American's don't eff with footie. Is they don't understand most scoring chances and scorers are only as good as their other teammates. Look at what Bale was able to do at Real with proper defenders/midfield behind him. Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo, Canavaro, Schwinestiger, Lahm, ect...these are all guys who aren't out and out strikers but play the game at a very high level and are applauded for it and are loved in their home nations. All it takes is that ONE guy who is just a creator on the pitch to become a superstar..
