Lol at "that's not the point of the thread." The fact that Costigan was the main protagonist is a large part of the reason why it was so shocking. You don't expect to see the main protagonist get his head blown off in a scene that didn't have much buildup and wasn't the final scene, by a bit character who wasn't even in the frame when the shot happened.

It's far and away more shocking and unexpected than Sonny's death and it's not even close imo. Sonny was a goon and goons die. You said your piece though. Agree to disagree.

Segal in Executive Decision. Sent me into shock and comes out of nowhere. I had seen Casey Ryback wipe out terrorists on Boats, on trains, streets, industrial centers and almost every setting you could think off. So when he got the briefing in the movie, I was thinking "Under Siege: Aero edition" but then he suddenly died saving Kurt Russel's character. I refused to believe for about 25 minutes, I was adamant that he had parachute and used it at the last minute, he never returned.
