Was there ever a more shocking death in a movie than William Costigan in The Departed?

That shyt came completely out of nowhere.

He was the protagonist of the movie. He'd been through hell. It looked like he was close to finally getting his name cleared and ride off into the sunset as a hero.

Then out of the blue he randomly gets his brains blown out. The whole theater was like :merchant: :merchant: :merchant: :damn: :damn: :damn:

shyt like that just doesn't happen in movies. Scorsese defying all convention.

No way. Sonny wasn't the main protagonist of the movie.
That wasn't the point of the thread. The point was most shocking death. Sonny's death was shocking, brutal, longlasting, and really came at a time when nobody thought it was coming. it was perfect surprise and makes The Departed seem like a kid's movie.

Lol at "that's not the point of the thread." The fact that Costigan was the main protagonist is a large part of the reason why it was so shocking. You don't expect to see the main protagonist get his head blown off in a scene that didn't have much buildup and wasn't the final scene, by a bit character who wasn't even in the frame when the shot happened.

It's far and away more shocking and unexpected than Sonny's death and it's not even close imo. Sonny was a goon and goons die. You said your piece though. Agree to disagree.

:patrice: nah breh. not at all. You're making it seem like Sonny was Luca Brasi or Tessio or Clemenza.

No its not, and you do realize that The Departed is more of an ensemble piece (especially if you look at it from the context of internal affairs); Leo and Damon were the two main characters. Plus the scene was shocking, but it was also cartoonish; When Sonny is killed, it literally comes out of nowhere and it is extremely brutal; so brutal that it leaves a shadow of cynicism over the entire franchise after it happens.

Again, Leo's death was surprising, but not "shocking" in the way you mean it. Sonny's death shocked me to the core and I thought about it for a while afterwards....Leo's death made me say "damn, good ending" and that was it. There were no stakes with it. You're giving the movie waaay more credit than it deserves, especially when Internal Affairs is better.
