No, he was not supposed to be corny. The Patriot, and wrestlers like Tracy Smothers, were part of a different era. And as wrestling transitioned out of the 1980's, those kind of wrestlers stood out as antiquations.

Think about it. WWE could get away with Hillbilly Jim as a major face...and audiences weren't supposed to mock him as an ignorant hick.
