What you are saying is true but doesnt apply in this case. That's what he did...he tried to get her to go with him to the gym...to see if she would go and actually serious bout getting in shape.
He texted a bit first to build rapport then asked her on a date. shyt all seems normal except that he asked for a gym date as the first date.
Only thing he did wrong was ask for a gym date without having consistently gone out with this person prior but even then he did it for a specific reason. The fact she didn't bite should be sufficient for OP to keep it pushing.
