Very clever propaganda at work in this film, both subtle and obvious. You had the blatant Cold War, East vs West symbolism as well as the "We're doing it for the principle, not the money" aspect which automatically grants higher ground for all American military endeavors from then on in the minds of the public but the finer details really make you think:

Apollo was a sun god. Drago represents a dragon which "kills" the sun during an eclipse and thus is also the moon. When he steps in the ring Apollo aka the sun shows he's repping the Bull aka Taurus:

Complete with the song and dance (linked with the sun god Apollo) and material excess (Taurian traits) whilst the bear is much larger, more menacing, austere and standing there quietly. The Russian people claim descent from the Mother Bear which is why the image is linked with the country and you'll notice how Dragos wife is shown as having more clout than him repeatedly as well as speaking for him. The constellation Draco is right next to The Great Bear in the night sky.

Financial markets - Bull and Bear. The Cold War was fought primarily on economic grounds. Also consider that Russia and China are both Communist countries and the dragon links should become even more obvious.

Now the question is why was all of this symbolism woven into the movie? What did it do to your awareness as you witnessed it? Why do most people lack the insight to put together the pieces and meaning of what they're seeing but accept it anyway?

Really this is just a tiny bit of what was on display as some aspects used are really, really obtuse but it should be enough to make you think.

No doubt. Just like Top Gun was military recruitment fodder:

If you're well read on mythology and things like that you can't help but notice that they pick out and place a lot of symbolism based on astrology, theology and psychology liberally throughout so many films. Way too much of it to be an accident but then it could be that using those themes activates subconscious memories in the viewers which generates a feeling of familiarity that translates to greater sales/affinity for the message.

Either way its quite interesting.

Drago a dumb ass for doing it for free as well. The Soviets dumb for letting this happen. Rocky’s financial advisor was stupid as well.

This fight was bigger than rumble in the jungle, thrilla in Manila. All that shyt.

:mindblown:

For the Russians, it was for glory not money.

Their guy killed the former American champion while he was wearing star spangled boxers.

They went to sleep like :banderas: that night

Rocky watched Apollo die in the ring and at the point all he wanted to do was avenge his friend, money wasn’t really his main focus at that time. :yeshrug:
But he didn't avenge him

Most unsatisfying revenge ever. When thre guy beat the shyt out of Apollo and killed him and it took this dude 15 rounds to knock him out.

Back in the DMV
That’s the real reason Adrian was mad

This probably could’ve been the biggest payday in boxing history. :mjlol:

And how was Paulie able to give Rocky’s accountant power of attorney? :dead:

Did Paulie sign his name or did he forge Rocky’s

He had to fukk around and buy that low class robot for his house. Rocky was a fool with his $. No wonder he fought for free

Idk

His speech at the end of the fight seemed the opposite of propaganda at the time

"I came here tonight
and I didn't know what to expect
...
I've seen a lot of people hatin me and
I didn't know what to feel about that
so I guess I didn't like you much
then either
...

During this fight,
I seen a lot of changing
...
The way yous felt about me
and the way I felt about you
...
In here there were 2 guys
killin each other, but I guess
thats better than 20 million
...
What I'm trying to say is
If I can change
...
and you can change
...
Everybody can change
..."
