He is not lying. While Trump was known as a rich yuppie. He was also not looked at negatively by most black people not from New York.
I assume black people who lived in NY may have had a different perspective

People used to think he was shady for longest time. It wasn't until recently yall starting rewriting history.
His housing discrimination lawsuit was national news. Common discourse was to clown his buildings as cheap and tacky in response to that and that never went away. he was just a shady con artist to everybody.
