Him, Noname and jpegmafia (and some others I'd imagine) have all at some point bytched about having a mostly white audience. I do feel like conscious rap or rap that has an avant garde way of exposing black pain tends to be particularly consumed by the libdem suburban white crowd. It's kinda weird

It's really Post Modern Long Beach crip raps.

A lot of Vince fans came for OFWGKTA, and stayed cause he made good music.

This is still, to me, the best song he's ever done.

I enjoy quite a lot of the recent stuff, but this is by far his best song and I don't think it's even close.

It's the best encapsulation of him as a writer and a person and the production is stellar.

But even listening to it I can understand why he wasn't reaching a larger black audience making music like this. It's moody and kinda emo sonically, so if you don't listen to what he's saying you won't catch how hood and black it is.
and ain't it a damn shame that the genre of hip-hop is now so controlled by 'vibe' and 'beat', that lyrics do not matter at all. Homie talking all this pro-black shyt and it's going over black folk head because Metro ain't give them 808s to vibe to. Meanwhile, the whole genre started as poetry and its current listeners care least about the words.

The correlation of hip hop becoming dumb, becoming pop music, and becoming a largely white-patronized product... I'm not saying they've caused each other, but...

nah. fukk it. I'm saying exactly that.

But that OFWGKTA is a blessing and a curse

It’s like the most loyal cult like fan base but it’s also mostly White youth lgbt type that’ll like anything associated with Tyler

Even earl had to distance himself from that following. Now he’s rapping over alchemist beats and doing alternate experimental rap

Middle class and higher folk tend to have more of a tolerance and interest in "weird", experimental music or music with verbose (fake) deep lyrics. Your needs are taken care of and then some so you have time and energy to seek out cutting edge music. I'd bet when John Coltrane got really out there towards the end of his life, he didn't have many working class black folk at his shows. Prince had a similar issue post-Purple Rain until Diamonds and Pearls, which was good but not nealy as weird and influenced by other genres as his 1984-89 music.

there's a reason why the public has become more dumbed down in regards to their media consumption as income inequality grows. A lot of original films that made money in the 90s would flop if they came out today.

So my question is , why aren't the black fans supporting his shyt? As far as going to shows and shyt.

They do, but Camp Flog Gnaw isn't a primarily black event...it never was, and never will be.

It's like when people saw the Kendrick and Friends and were confused why they got to see an actual representation of the what people who listen to the music look like.

I didnt know asking if someone watched family matters was an important topic. Seems like ahuniliation ritual for him. That white boy connects with vince for some reason…

Always thought it was crazy looking when black rappers have almost conpletely white fan bases and then regret it snd try hard as hell to bring black people back to their shows and ends up alienating both bases.

Vince doesn’t music that Black people rock with (no pun intended). It’s very left field, ironic since he’s really a super crip who was bout that life.

This more who he is, personally.

But it isn’t the type of music he does. He’s kinda stuck in that Odd Future lane that most Black people don’t really mess with cus you can’t play it anyhere.

This song (played in the OP video) was his one chance to blow up in the “hood” with the Juicy J chorus and didn’t.

That and Magic

But yeah, he in a conundrum where his fans are the exact people he despises

White people also like J Cole

But also a surprising amount of black girls do also

Maybe the issue is Vice has like ZERO white female fans unlike Earl or Tyler

I feel his pain

that also could (should ) be interpreted as playful engagement... it would definitely be in alignment with his deadpan approach

akin to how the op is ostensibly "humiliation" .... but it really isn't

everyone patting themselves on the back for being smart here.... so lets be smart ?
