I understand the reasons why some may feel a certain way about Abe. but, let's look at this from a different angle.
Now, back then in Abe's time, as you can imagine, racism was rife. Abe knew he had to say some things to appease many of the racist lawmakers who just weren't going to give way to any law that benefitted blacks.
Abe knew what he had in his heart. He knew slavery was wrong and needed to end. He knew that.
With regards to the civil war, like any human being, he agonized over it because he wished he didn't have to turn brothers against brothers. He saw white americans killing other white americans, and the black american soliders getting tortured before being killed. he saw all this and like any normal human being, he thought, should I really be doing this? is this really worth it? would all this suffering be happening if I just ended the war? All this is evident in is second inaugural speech.

To say Abe wasn't an ally is really a shameful statement to make. and i hope none of you ever say that out loud in public.
