What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Nov. 18-20)​

As we approach Thanksgiving, the holiday Nas calls Hellday, cuz he's from poverty, neglected by the wealthy, what's on The Menu at the Box Office? Funny you should ask.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, fresh off it's $181M debut, continues to reign supreme. It'll play in 4,396 theaters this weekend. It's looking at $67.5M according to the Boxoffice Pro guys. That would represent a 62.7% drop from last weekend. Thor: Love and Thunder dropped by 67.7% in it's second weekend, while Multiverse of Madness dropped by 67%. I'm sure Disney will take that hold.

If you compare Wakanda Forever's first Monday to those two films, it's not good. Wakanda Forever grossed $11.1M which was a 72.8% drop. Multiverse of Madness was down 65% ($13.6M) on it's first Monday while Love and Thunder was down 62.5% ($12.1M)

I saw it on Tuesday to help get the numbers up. It was up 13.6% that day, which was better than Love and Thunder's first Tuesday of +12.1% and Multiverse of Madness' -7.4%. Aight, that's enough of the plus / minus and the percentages. We'll see what happens this weekend.

Black Adam is still holding on strong. Relatively speaking. After one week, Black Panther is already at $400.4M worldwide while Black Adam sits at $352.8M after four weeks. I liked em both tho so it's all good with me. Black Adam will show in 3,372 theaters. It's looking at $5.5M.

Ticket to Paradise looks to cross the $60M mark. It's currently at $57.9M domestically. It's also looking to push past $160M worldwide. Right now, it's at $156.3M. You can see it, if you want to. It's still playing in 3,268 theaters.

The Menu is the first of two new releases this week. I made a thread for it 5 weeks ago; it got it's first reply today. But, the reviews look good so far. It's at a 71 on Metacritic and a 7.5 on IMDb. It's looking at $8.4M from 3,211 theaters. 3,211? What a weird number.

This week's other new release is She Said. This is the #MeToo Harvey Weinstein movie where's he's in every trailer shown from behind. But the bald spot gives him away. Potted plants would've also worked. The movie stars Carey Mulligan as reporter Meagan Twohey. She starred in Promising Young Woman in 2020. Rose McGowan will not be played by Rose McGowan. Instead, Rose McGowan will be played by Keilly (not to be confused with Kelly) McQuail. Never heard of her. You can catch her at a cool 2,022 theaters. In the year 2022. Let's see if it can make $2.2M. Deuces are wild.

So, I wrote my article like I do every week. I changed the thread title like I do. I go to click "post reply" and when I look in the reply box, magically, my entire article was completely gone.
I'm not rewriting it. I'm just posting the chart for this week along with some commentary that I can remember.

Obviously, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was number one with $67.3M. That second week drop of 62.9% is better than Love and Thunder's 67.7% decline and Multiverse of Madness' 67% drop. It's far off Black Panther's -44.7% hold in it's second weekend. It's now totaled $287.9M after two weekends, just 1.6% off of Multiverse of Madness' $292.6M gross in the same span. Will Shuri cross $400M? Will she be too noble like T'Challa or take care bizness like Kilmonger?

Disney served up some $9M gourmet shyt off The Menu. This movie had a $30M production budget with that topflight cast iron cast. Disney just joined Universal as the only studios to cross $3B at the 2022 Worldwide Box Office. So, it's all gravy. Just in time for Thanksgiving turkey and mashed potatoes. I had to get these food puns off.

The Chosen Season 3: Episode 1 & 2 grossed $8.2M. This was a double billing of two episodes of a show I've never heard of. But never underestimate his power. He works in mysterious ways after all. This reminded me of The Clone Wars and how it was actually four episodes of the show rolled into one movie. And Anakin is Jedi Jesus.

Black Adam, with it's $4.4M, is now at $156.9M domestically and $366.1M worldwide, or whatever the equivalent is in Khandaq. It's now passed Shazam's worldwide gross of $366.08M. Shazam grossed $140.4M domestically on an $85M production budget. But facts are facts.

Black Widow finished it's run with $379.7M worldwide. I don't know if that includes the millions from Disney+ Premiere Access. Eternals finished with $402M worldwide, of which $164.8M was domestic. Black Adam is closing in on both.

Ticket to Paradise rounded out the top five with $3.2M. It's now up to $61.5M domestically and $158.4M worldwide. Danny Ocean was out there in the Bali Sea with Tess, making millions, doing their best to avoid Terry Benedict.

Y'all can quit the tomfoolery cuz y'all ain't fooling me. That's a new line that wasn't in the previous version.

She Said finished in 6th place. Deuces were wild like I wanted. We had a 2022 movie, showing in 2,022 theaters, grossing $2.2M.

But I hate to hear he say she say shyt unless he say she say she on my tick-et. It's no coincidence, movies who fukk wit me get shot up. I do it Harvey style, drive by and tear ya plants in the pots up. You saw Universal putting up a crazy front. I stay with the mac cuz Mac-Gowan tried to blaze me once.

Bones and All did $120K from 5 theaters. I have no interest in seeing this one. Trailer didn't do it for me.

Spielberg's The Fableman's did $94k from the same four theaters from last weekend.

‘She Said’ really came out of the blue, eh? Don’t think I’ve seen any marketing for it on TV like that minus box ads on the internet.

I’ll give it a watch someday when it drops on streaming but it isn’t a surprise to see it doing poorly at the BO considering the subject material, similarly to The Last Duel. Although TLD was still a really good film.

What is the Box Office Thankful for? Black Panther & the MCU. That Means Disney, too: Weekend Box Office Results (Nov. 25-27)​

There's some similarities with what was playing at the movies at this time last year. There was an MCU movie (Eternals) an animated Disney movie (Encanto) a non MCU superhero movie (Venom 2) 6+ weeks in it's run, and an adult crime drama (House of Gucci). This year, we have Black Panther 2, Strange World, Black Adam and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. It's like they got this shyt down to a science. Let's see how this year's Thanksgiving fare fared at the box office.

To the, surprise of no one, Wakanda Forever finished first again with $45.9M. It made $64M over the 5-day weekend. It made $8.1M on Thanksgiving which was up 8.3% over last Thursday. It's $18.2M was up 1.1% from last Friday. It's now up to $675.5M worldwide, $367.6M of which is domestic. That 17 day domestic total is nearly $25M ahead of Doctor Strange 2's $342.7M. Shuri ate good with her favorite colonizer this Thanksgiving.

This year's animated Disney adventure, the $135M budgeted Strange World, debuted with $18.6M ($11.9 weekend) which was good enough for second place. That was way behind Encanto's $40.5M 5-day take and $27.2M weekend. Not with Disney was hoping for. It only made $9.2M internationally. Strange World won't be shown in Russia, China or the entire Middle East. Apparently a member of the rainbow coalition makes an appearance, which is going to cost Disney millions. Not good after the Lightyear "debacle." Is theatrical still the way to go for Disney animation? Bobby Iger, you gotta clean this shyt up.

The knives were out for Thanksgiving dinner. Glass Onion, the Knives Out sequel, made $9.4M from only 696 theaters. That's an average of $13.5K per theater. It finished with $13.2M over the 5 days. It'll be shown in theaters until Tuesday, if you haven't seen it yet. It'll be streaming on Netflix on December 23rd. Knives Out was a Thanksgiving success back in 2019, when it debuted with a $26.7M weekend. It did so well, with a $165.3M domestic cume, that Netflix paid $450M for the rights to make the next two movies.

Might have to catch this just for Madelyn Cline. Apparently she played Tina in Stranger Things 2, one of the broads who was swooning over Billy.

Devotion flew into fourth place with $5.9M and $9M over the 5-day weekend. This one stars Jonathan Majors aka @Kang The Conqueror as a Navy fighter pilot in the Korean War. His wingman is none other than Hangman from Top Gun: Maverick. This dude is corner in the market on playing Navy wingmen. fukk around and get typecast.

You seeing that right. It's not Top Gun.

Rounding out the Thanksgiving menu was none other than The Menu with $5.2M. The Searchlight Picture (Disney) pic finished in fifth place so I guess that makes it the dessert course, which, for me, would be warm apple pie and vanilla bean ice cream. Apple pie alamode. The apple pie has to be warm and the vanilla ice cream has to be vanilla bean. Not French vanilla. Not vanilla. Not slow churned vanilla. Vanilla bean. And, if you've seen The Menu, it was a real treat. Maybe my favorite movies of the year. It did $7.3M for the 5 days and has totaled $18.6M domestically and $33.4M worldwide.

Black Adam is now on demand and pulled in another $3.3M. Its domestic total now stands at $162.9M. It will pass. Eternals' $164.8M this week. It's $378M worldwide take will pass Black Widow's $379.7M tomorrow.

Spielberg's The Fableman's went wide, as it played in 638 theaters and made $2.2M. That's disappointing, given the director and it's / his story.

Ticket to Paradise, with it's $1.8M, sailed past $65M domestically. It passed $160M worldwide with $161.9M.

Smile, in it's ninth week, made $428K and $590K over the 5 days. It's up to $105.4M domestically.

The only benefit with Glass Onion being a limited release for me was seeing how packed the theater was. Made for a fun experience as the crowd was super into it. EEAAO was probably the last film to have an audience that hot over here. No doubt it would’ve been a box office hit had it got a longer run, but I also understand why Netflix made the move.

Santa Sleighs; In First Place, Black Panther Stays: Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 2-4)​

We're three away from Christmas but Santa Claus has come to theaters in a town near you. Violent Night is here. It did good business but it wasn't quite enough to wrestle first place away from Wakanda Forever.

In It's 4th weekend, Wakanda Forever grossed $17.5M to take first place. It now stands at $393.7M domestically. That's well ahead of Doctor Strange 2's pace, which stood at $370.4M after it's 4th weekend. It's worldwide total is $733M. Maybe it'll threaten $1B but it's legs / multiplier is currently 2.17, just behind Doctor Strange 2's 2.19, which finished with $952.2M. We'll see. Black Panther doing less than a billy?

Aight, now we get to the movie I'm excited for. Violent Night. It debuted with $13.3M in 3,682 theaters. It grossed $20.3M worldwide. Not bad for a $20M movie. I'm sure Universal will take that.

They saying this is Die Hard, which is already a Christmas movie, meets Home Alone. David Harbour as Kris Kringle, running around giving fools the business a la Chief Hopper? He's got his own black partner he communicates with a la Al Powell? Strangling bad guys with stockings and stuffing coal down their throats? Sounds like an instant Christmas classic. I'll be seeing this on Tuesday.

Taking 3rd, with a paltry $4.9M, was collosal failure, Strange World. You can't win em all, Disney. I ain't follow this shyt cuz the trailer looked like some week old leftovers. Come to find out, the rainbow coalition is championing Disney's first biracial, gay, animated, teenager. Well, I'll be a gay, animated, monkey's uncle.

This catastrophe has only made $25.5M domestically and $42.3M worldwide. Bob Iger just gon sweep this shyt under the rug and keep it moving.

Moving up one spot, into 4th place, was The Menu, with $3.5M. It had a good hold in it's 3rd weekend, as it only fell 35.1%. It still hasn't grossed it's $30M production budget but it's getting close, as it's domestic total stands at $24.7M. It has pulled in $47.2M worldwide. Chef Slowik can make a lotta $9.95 cheeseburgers with that cash, but only if Margot sends the other shyt back and questions his ability as a cook.

Man, make me a fukkin cheeseburger to take me back to my childhood...If you still have it in you, you pompous, pretentious a$$hole.

Trading places with The Menu, and rounding out the top five, was Devotion, with $2.7M. It fell 52.6% from it's debut last weekend and has totaled $13.8M domestically. Jonathan Majors, aka @Kang The Conqueror, is biding his time until Creed lll and Ant-Man 3 release in February and March. Until then, he'll have to settle for a couple of top five finishes.

Black Adam, with $1.6M, has now grossed $165.1M domestically. That means that Black Adam has now outgrossed Eternals' $164.8M domestic total. With a worldwide gross of $384.1M, Black Adam has now outgrossed Black Widow's $379.7M theatrical total. With it's $125M Disney Plus' Premier Access take, Black Widow's total gross is technically $504.7M. Or is it "actually"? Either way, theatrically, Black Adam wins.

Top Gun: Maverick re-released in IMAX and made $700K from 1,864 theaters. It's domestic total jumped from $716.6M to $717.3M. It remains the 5th highest grossing movie ever at the Domestic Box Office.
