My Thoughts

Apologies for getting this out late, today. My luck ran out and I finally caught the Kung Flu for the first time, through no fault of my own. Foster sister caught it, unbeknownst to anybody, and she was coughing and shyt without my mother thinking to test her for COVID. By the time she did test her, it was too late. It hit me. It hit my mother the next day. So, I blame my mother. :dead:

Aside from that, I had to watch that Patriots' debacle of a season opener. :beli:

Then I'm looking at the clock like :leon: I gotta get this shyt out before House of the Dragon hits. So, we may not be looking at my best work. Gotta power through, though. Here we go.

In a down weekend for the Domestic Box Office ($39.7M) Newcomer, Barbarian, scared moviegoers into their seats, to the tune of $10M. That includes $850K in Thursday previews. That $10M is an impressive feat considering it was only projected to do $8M. :ehh:

If you look a little closer, it gets even more impressive for Barbarian. It grossed $3.8M on Friday (including Thursday previews). Typically, the debut Friday is the highest grossing day for a new movie. That was not the case with Barbarian. It actually grossed $3.9M on Saturday. You just don't see that with new movies. And this is a movie that I want to see. Thanks, COVID, you sonuvabytch.

This shyt looks creepy as fukk. You got Pennywise sans makeup, shrouded in darkness like he in that sewer about to bite Georgie's arm off. Only, here, he's a good guy? Or is he? :patrice:

Look, I'm not gonna pretend like I know what the fukk Brahmastra Part One: Shiva is. COVID has affected my ability to research. That, and time constraints. I know this: it's part one of a Disney Bollywood trilogy. It only played in 810 theaters and still took second place with $4.4M. Impressive, considering that $3.6M projection. So, Disney took the two top spots. Finally, a win for the little guy.

shiva-aliabhatt.gif

Coming in third with $3.2M was Bullet Train. That brings it's domestic total to $92.5M. It's now up to $211.8M worldwide. It's now $3M away from breaking even, which is something we thought might not happen. Good for you, @Paper Boi. I'll catch you Thursday at 10 in Atlanta.

smiling-lemon.gif

Another week, another top five finish for Top Gun: Maverick. It's $3.1M was good for 4th place in it's 16th weekend. :wow: With a worldwide gross of $1.453B, it's now moved past Frozen ll for as the 11th highest grossing film ever, worldwide. Iont think there's much more that I can say about it. :yeshrug:

top-gun-top-gun-maverick.gif

It was hard to find a new gif to use since this shyt has been in theaters so long. Pretty sure I haven't used this yet. If I have, chalk it up to COVID brain.

Taking fifth place was DC League of Super-Pets with $2.8M. It's now up to $85.4M domestically and $168M worldwide. It's also finished in the top five in all but one of it's 7 weekends. My super pet, Whiskers, has to stay in the basement so I (really my mother) don't give her COVID.

PXL-20220830-220836602.jpg

Miss you, Whisk, but it's for your own good. I can't trust these muthafukkas upstairs, walking around maskless and shyt. I gotchu.

Notables Outside the Top Five

Minions: The Rise of Gru has now grossed $903.9M worldwide. That the first animated movie to accomplish that feat since 2019's Frozen ll.

Spider-Man: No Way Home — The More Fun Stuff Version
fell from 3rd place to 10th place this weekend, with $1.3M.

Nope is up to $122M domestically and $165.3M worldwide.

Jaws' Bruce bit into $620K in ticket sales and is up to $4.5M domestically in it's re-release.

Jurassic World Dominion pulled in $157K as it moves at Stegosaurus-like pace towards $1B worldwide.

Aight y'all. I'll catch y'all next week. Hopefully COVID free. :salute:

Happy to see it for Barbarian. One of the best horror films I’ve watched this year. Also liked how the trailer didn’t really give anything away, it made the grand reveal that much sweeter.

I purposely haven't watched any trailers or read any reviews with the exception of Jeremy Jahns, who did not spoil anything. I gotta go in blind for this one.

Yeah trailers didn’t give anything away. Movie was shot great. Wasn’t scary but when you piece together the sub plot it’s really disturbing.

I do wonder if I’m selling my self short on Maverick though…like I want to see it in theaters but I wanna do IMAX and it’s always at their far out locations at weird ass times for me, and of course no more Dolby ever. Is it still worth it in regular ass format?

What's at the Movies this Weekend? September 16-18

Ay what's good y'all. Happy Nappy Roots Day. I still got the Kung Flu. Or, I should say, I'm still testing positive, so I won't be going to the movies. :francis:

Sony's new movie, The Woman King, brought in $1.7M in Thursday previews from 3,271 theaters. It'll play at 3,765 locations this weekend. Sony is anticipating $12M. I saw the trailer on TV for the first time while I was watching Thursday Night Football.

A24 has another new movie releasing this weekend, Pearl. This is the prequel to Ti West's X, which released back in March. Both Ti West and Mia Goth return. This is one I'd go to see cuz I really enjoyed X. This is also the second movie in a trilogy, with MaXXXine coming in the future. Pearl will play at 3,000 locations. Peep Pearl's trailer.

If you haven't seen X, here's a review.

My Thoughts

With a $19M debut, The Woman King, took first place. It outperformed even Sony's modest $12M projection. This is another rare debut that grossed more on Saturday than Friday: $7.15M vs $6.85M. That $19M is good for 38% of it's $50M production budget. It's yet to be released Internationally so we'll see how it holds up with Don't Worry Darling dropping next weekend.

we-have-arrived-nanisca.gif

These mothafukkas emerging from the tall grass like the raptors in Jurassic Park 2.

Barbarian took second place with an impressive $6.3M. That was only a 40.3% decline from last weekend. That's great when you consider that horror movies typically see a 65% drop in their second weekends. It's really impressive when you see that it was done in 2,340 theaters which is 600 fewer theaters than Pearl was shown in. It's now up to $20.9M domestically and $21.9M worldwide. And I still can't see it cuz I'm still testing faintly positive with the Hong Kong Flu. Hopefully I'm good for Tuesday. :francis:

are-you-sure-you-have-the-right-place-barbarian.gif

Yeah, I'm pretty sure, Bill. Now put your Pennywise makeup on.

From one horror movie another, Pearl took 3rd place with a $3.12M debut. That may not sound like much but let's compare it to X, since it is a prequel. X, which debuted on the weekend on March 18th, grossed $4.2M from 2,865 theaters. That was good for 4th place. It debuted when The Batman was in it's 3rd weekend, pulling in $36.7M. Uncharted was still making $7.8M and No Way Home was doing $3.1M. Taking all of that into account... probably not quite what A24 was looking for. I still wanna see it though. It's got 7.5 on IMDb and 72 on Metacritic. That could be a cool double feature on Tuesday. :ehh:

ef3a2b948fb38648c9798e861ed2215503833b22.gif

See How They Run took 4th with $3.1M. That was in line with Disney's projections. It could flip places with Pearl come Monday. I ain't know shyt about this movie. I may have to consult the trailer I posted on Friday. Apparently this movie had a good shot of being released on Hulu but Disney decided to give it a 45 day theatrical window. So there's that. Moving on.

003c02daddb4afb4a1157df70c9aaa8bc0b21156.gif

Rounding out the top 5 was Bullet Train with $2.5M. After 7 weeks, it's shot it's way up to $96.3M domestically and $222M worldwide. That's 2.6 times its $85.9M production budget. It's now passed the break-even point.

oh-really-ladybug.gif

Yeah, really, Brad. Good for you.

Notables Outside the Top Five

The Invitation, with another $1.7M, is now up to $21.4M domestically and $30M worldwide. That's on a $10 production budget. That's a success.

gasp-evie.gif

Minions: The Rise of Gru is now up to $364M domestically, which only trails Despicable Me 2's $368M total as the top spot in the Despicable franchise.

Nope, with another $410K, is now up to $122.7M domestically and $169.04M worldwide. It's now less than $1M shy of breaking even with it's $68M production budget.

See y'all next weekend. :salute:

What's at the Movies this Weekend?
September 23-25

This weekend sees the wide release of Warner Bros.' Don't Worry Darling, which will play in 4,113 theaters. One of the top pawgs in the game, Florence Pugh, aka the New Black Widow, stars, but does not promote the new movie, directed by Olivia Wilde. Go peep @casa bey thread on Florence: Florence Pugh https://www.thecoli.com/threads/florence-pugh.899951/ :banderas::noah::noah::ohlawd::blessed:

I saw the preview for this when I saw Nope. It looked intriguing.

The Woman King sees no change from last weekend's 3,765 theaters. It's made $23.9M thus far at the Domestic Box Office.

The same is true of Pearl, which maintains it's 2,935 theater count. I haven't seen it yet. I'm sure @Lootpack has. If so, he can speak on it's merits and if it warrants you going to the theater to see. Pearl is doing pretty well so far, as the murderous broad had pulled in $4.3M so far.

In a stunner, Barbarian, sees an even wider release as it jumps up by 550 theaters; it'll be shown at 2,890 theaters. It has done really well and has made $23M domestically. The wider release is a little surprising when you consider that Disney is also re-releasing Avatar.

Speaking of Avatar, the re-release will play in 1,860 theaters. Disney is estimating 90 percent of Avatar screenings will be in 3D, including virtually all IMAX shows and 85 percent of other PLF screens (including 1,600 RealD 3D locations). 2D showings will be minimal. It makes sense since Avatar earned almost 80% of it's lifetime gross from 3D showings. This is also the first time the film will be screening 4K HDR. In case you haven't seen it, (I took my niece to see it when it came out back in '09) here's the trailer:

On the Come Up sees a wide release of 603 theaters while it also releases on Paramount+ on Friday. It's a coming of age, battle rap movie, directed by Sanaa Lathan. Yeah, that Sanaa Lathan.

fd8ec2fabf67d2ceb365367083df7c9e.jpg

Ignore the Weinstein Company. That's just unfortunate. Peep the trailer.

'Don't Worry Darling,' Women are still King this Weekend: September 23-25 Weekend Box Office Results

So, I wrote my box office article. It was damn near done, maybe a few sentences left. But it was time to watch House of the Dragon. So, I go to hit the Save Draft button. Apparently, I hit the Delete Draft button. :francis: All my hard work wiped out in one fell swoop. :wow: So now, I have write it again. Aight, Weekend Box Office Results, take two.

The top 10 was up 28.1% from last weekend. This weekend saw a gross of $55.1M compared to $43.0M. Aight, let's see how we got there.

We had a new movie from Olivia Wilde. Her thread, courtesy of @casa bey :
This production was full of controversy, but don't worry, darling because Don't Worry Darling debuted with $19.2M to take the top spot. $3.1M came from Thursday previews. It grossed another $10.8M overseas for a weekend total of a cool $30M. Not bad for a $35M movie. It basically had the same debut as The Woman King, which grossed $19.05M last weekend on a $50M production budget. So, that's a win for Warner Bros. Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh.

shocked-alice.gif

The aforementioned The Woman King took 2nd place with $11.1M. That was down 41.5% from last weekend but it's still grossed $37.5M worldwide. So, maybe we can call it "The Woman King Consort?" Whataya think about that, Viola?

we-are-dahomey-the-woman-king.gif

:dwillhuh: I mean, that's not what I asked you...Aight. The Woman King it is. Damn. Calm down, ma. Easy. Easy. :umad:

Coming in 3rd was 2009's Avatar with $10M or whatever the equivalent is in Pandora. That's aight considering it was re-released in 1,860 theaters. Disney can thank IMAX and 3D theaters for that total. It also grossed $20.5M internationally for a total of $30.5M. That's good for number one at the worldwide box office. But this about the domestic box office. You got it, Neytiri?

avatar-neytiri.gif

Holding down 4th place was Barbarian with $4.8M. Dropping only 26.2% in it's third weekend, Barbarian is putting up impressive numbers after three weekends. It's now made an impressive $28.4M domestically. It's only been released in 4 markets internationally, where's it's made $1.5M. Still haven't seen it yet.

why-dont-you-just-crash-here-barbarian.gif

Nah, I'm good. I'll catch this shyt from the comfort of my Airbnb.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Pearl with $1.91M. That marked a 38.7% drop from last weekend. That actually compares favorably to X's second weekend decline of 48.7%. X did make $8.2M through two weekends to Pearl's $6.6M. Maybe that bodes well for Pearl to make a few more kills and a few more bucks.

OrderlyFlawlessHoopoe-size_restricted.gif

That is a scary sight.

Notables Outside the Top Five

See How They Run grossed $1.9M so it's possible it could flip places with Pearl.

DC League of Super-Pets has now passed $90M domestically.

With another $175K, Nope has now broken even with $170.7M at the worldwide box office.

Jurassic World Dominion is now at $999.6M worldwide and should pass $1B this week. I've been checking it periodically and there was a point where The-Numbers had it a $1.1B, then it dropped down to $999.6M. I've already seen it reported from multiple sites that it's crossed $1B but I need to see the occular proof like Othello.

Never understood why some thought Don’t Worry Darling would bomb. Wilde was a respected director coming off Booksmart before the behind-the-scenes drama ran wild through social media and Harry Styles still has a large enough fanbase that would want to see it.

Not great, but not outright bad either, esp for an R-rated film. Curious to see how much it’ll drop off next weekend.
