Growing up it cost a few hundred a season to play and there was the ODP (olympic development program) route that was a few hundred also where u could work ur way up with licensed coaches from around the area. If u were good then you moved up to the next tier of players that were picked as the best in their respective regions of ur state. I made a handful of cuts until I got to the state level representing team florida where they sent us to Alabama to play the equivalent ODP players from the southeastern states (Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, etc).Everyone in this thread isn't lying .

So to play in the good clubs with better competition you have to pay .Growing up it cost a few hundred a season to play and there was the ODP (olympic development program) route that was a few hundred also where u could work ur way up with licensed coaches from around the area. If u were good then you moved up to the next tier of players that were picked as the best in their respective regions of ur state. Had I made that I woulda been on the regional team with players that made it from the southeast to play the other 3 corners of the us.
A few problems with that structure was that the coaches for these things only needed to take courses to be granted a sufficient license to be decision-makers in the program. One year I was being evaluated by a coach who's team I had just quit the season before. Funny enough that was the only time I tried out where I was cut in one of the earlier rounds. I think it was that same round where me and a friend from my same city and who was a teammate of mine at times were among a group who then were asked to line up to run a 40 yard dash. It was the first time I had been asked to do that for soccer. I've never been the fastest guy on the field but I never was slow and if u tackle well and have a high soccer iq you know how to use angles to combat that. My friend was the fastest and that definitely helped him to get selected then. The problem with that is ok someone runs a fast 40 time. Can he do that with a ball at his feet? Does he have good enough ball control? Does he keep his head up? It's just not that great of an evaluation tool. If that player had all that other stuff in order them he'll yeah that's an Advantage but otherwise you end up with a deandrr yedlin which I'm pretty sure is how that him got on the squad. I hate watching him play a dumb ball out of the back, turn it over, recover them the announcer praises him for his speed to be able to recover. Well no shyt he has no ball control, you'll probably see a lot of recoveries due to his speed cuz he's ass as a player
Then all these soccer academies started popping up. Those I believe were more expensive and usually based in the bigger market cities that you would likely have to travel to. All of a sudden players were jumping from their club teams to play in the academies that had better competition and played in a more competitive statewide league. Then teams from overseas were popping up in places like Miami such as cagliari fc where my friend and teammate on the ODP state team left his former team to play with. That was a better route for him cuz they were directly linked to the cagliari football club in Italy. So other countries were literally coming here to Miami and selecting American players better than America was. So he did ODP and he did the cagliari thing. Guess where he went to play? Italy. Then he had some stints with the youth us squads then in Prague, then Germany, then Tampa and now he's on the Philadelphia union.
Now if u compare his experience with mine you'll see he was from Miami. I'm from Gainesville florida. Not much of a soccer city. All college football really. So there was no cagliari fc for me to use as a vehicle. It was all so unorganized and every player almost had a different vision for how to go pro.
Then you had your own club team which you had a chance to shine and a lot did but if you hadn't been noticed yet and college rolled around and you wanted to get seen, some players had highlight tapes and most didn't so that's another thing that would have helped. Walking on was always an option but I chose to go to uf and guess what? Title 9. Too many men's athletics so there is no men's soccer team to make room for more women's scholarships.
Then there was high school soccer which was a decent way to get seen also. I was always a starter on every team I was my whole life. Then I got to high school, tried out, they decided I should start JV even tho my older brother was one of the leading scorers on varsity. I played JV for a year freshman year. When I finally got my shot on varsity coach calls my name and puts me out on the field as a midfielder. My first possession I got the ball, took someone on on the sideline, the ball was bouncing a little and for some reason I instinctively took a crack at the ball from around the edge of the center circle on the field between midfield and the 18 yard box. I watched as it flew thru the air with pace and dipped hitting the crossbar nearly scoring and catching the goalie off his line. Next whistle I was subbed out. Lost all respect for that coach. Next club season we got a new coach. Guess who it was. Him. So I get that for some it's a money issue but in my opinion it's not about the finances so much as evaluation of talent and an organized youth system like they have in Europe.
My dad drove us all over florida to play but would do things like get to know a coach say from Melbourne or Tampa or Miami who had played against us and you are able to play for that team and just go be a part of that team for a tournament as a "guest player" which is what he did with me and my brother that helped us tremendously by getting the opportunity to play on better teams. But I don't think I know anyone who paid the amounts some posters on here are talking about. And I'm sure they did pay that I just don't know where they did that and why. My uncle has a young son and is doing something like that tho. He has him on a Barcelona youth team in Miami and they went to Barcelona to play which cost him a lot but that's not the only route and shouldn't be and there have always been other options. But if u can pay that and are good enough it can pay off like for my friend but that's a big gamble
If you want to go the confirmation bias route. I just laid out several avenues for you but If that's all you read then by all means yes you need 15k to play soccer brehSo to play in the good clubs with better competition you have to pay .
Russia is red white and blue tooAmericans just pretend to rep someone else whenever they're out anyway. Fans will just look awkward and hurt if they go rockin red white and blue.
You said all that but confirmed that for better competition you have to get in these expensive leagues .If you want to go the confirmation bias route. I just laid out several avenues for you but If that's all you read then by all means yes you need 15k to play soccer breh
You don't have to be in the expensive leagues to get noticed tho. There are other ways but the system of player selection for the national team is just fuzzy which is the biggest problem imo.You said all that but confirmed that for better competition you have to get in these expensive leagues .
Of course you can play anywhere but you know damm well you gotta spend money in these clubs to have a comp.
Dude is one of the best clubs in the area and he travels .@ThiefyPoo let's look at yedlins path.
Emerald city fc in Seattle, ODP,
DeAndre Yedlin - Wikipedia
2017-2018 Program Fees Emerald | Emerald City Football Club
Around $2300 at most to play a season a year with an option to pay $300 down and pay 6 installments.
Then ODP also in Washington.
So idk what ur guy was doing paying 15k a year but he doesn't sound like he was being economical about it
