The power of the president is grossly underestimated, but I agree it isnt anything like that of a king.
I don't know man, I would say its overestimated. Limited time in office, congress, pre-existing legislation & policies, precedence, etc.
Based solely off of the Bush administration I can say its underestimated. All of those things you name are easily side stepped and/or manipulated by a clever President with zero f*cks to give.

I think pinning everything that happened during the W years on W is giving him too much credit, actually. Most Americans, from both sides of the aisle, wanted blood after 9/11, and the CIA stepped in like "I got some intel for ya"
I really believe that W genuinely thought there was WMD's in Iraq.
Anyway, I never understood how people could call W the dumbest president we've ever had, and then say he's solely responsible for masterminding 9/11 and the cover up, the War in Iraq, and the Afghanistan Invasion. If dude pulled all that shyt off on his own in just 4 years he'd have to be fairly competent.
Just my opinion, though.

I would have loved to see how his presidency would have played out without 9/11. The economy was doing well before the attack from what I remember.

Who looks to us for protection? Only in disasters like the Haitian earthquake and those SE Asian tsunamis. ME doesnt want us there@Kritic but I thought the Jews were the biggest threat to everything in this world
But on a serious note, its a double edged sword for the US. Everyone looks to us for protection and we are kind of the world police but at the same time protecting one side will always infuriate the other side leading to turmoil down the road. Its a no-win situation.
