why is the military still using old model planes that need desperate repairs and upgrades????:what:

The old avionics have been upgraded and the engine/nacelle computers have failsafes that can't be over-ridden.

They are constantly upgraded with successive blocks.

There have been way more HH/UH crashes than anything...especially during OIF/OEF.

Biggest problems that rotary wing aircraft face are environmental.

Sometimes the stars align.

I mean, just look at it.

shyt looks like it needs NASA-level launch controls just to safely fly.

China currently researching their own tiltrotor design, although they seems to prefer V-280 style rotor configuration

If they didn't, the budget allocation for constructing new planes on any type of timed basis would bankrupt the United States.

See the F-22 & F-35.

I got out right as the Corps was transitioning from A-6E's to F/A-18-D's. The pilots I talked to always said those planes were deathtraps and the mechanics were like .......:scusthov:

Marine brass love strat planning with the 22. It makes their job easy... but the sweatys ultimately bear the cost/risk.

You could argue that the higher speed is worth it...but at the end of the day, it's not as good a helicopter apples to apples.

But...

You ever see a 22 at night? They look cool as shyt...and you know how Marines like shiny lights and colors.

The Ospreys were designed to replace helo's after the failure of Operation Eagle Claw and I never got to see one up close. Only saw them on the flight-line from a couple clicks away. I did, however, get a chance to view the interiors and cockpits of Airforce-1, an SR-71, and a couple A-10's.

Them pilots deserve EVERY bit of money they get on their LES's.......:damn:
