UPDATE:

Cam Newton signed 5-year, $103.8 million extension, per source. Earns him $67.6 million in first three year. Deal negotiated between Panthers and agents Bus Cook, Tony Paige and Chitta Mallik.

The deal is expected to pay Newton north of $20 million a year, though the details (as always) will be critical in determining the value of the deal.

Panthers and QB Cam Newton are on verge of a lucrative multi-year extension, league sources told ESPN. The Panthers had been confident that a deal with Newton would get done before training camp, and now the deal is expected to be done this week and as early as today, per sources. Newton's agents, Bus Cook and Tony Paige, have had discussions with Carolina in recent weeks and the Panthers have made it known they want Newton in Carolina for years to come.

If Newton doesn't get a scheme change, the contract amounts to dead money. As of right now, Neton is not good enough from the pocket to win in the playoffs. He isn't accurate enough downfield or in the short quarters. Moreover he doesn't throw well enough on the run like you might expect from a mobile QB. Carolina should have changed coordinators last year to something more Chip Kellyesque. If Newton succeeded in that scheme, I would gladly give him a contract.

Not many QB's are. At least he draws a crowd, better to lock him up than go back to drafting Jimmy Clausen's every year hoping for a miracle. :yeshrug:

Despite his rookie year and subsequent slander, Clausen is more accurate than Newton right now. Clausen was impressive against the Lions (?) last year in that one game he played for the Bears. He was on time and accurate in the short game -- consistently more so than Newton, who I fear will never be accurate enough from the pocket. For all the fanfare against him, Clausen's career really shouldn't be over yet.

There's a 50/50 chance first round QBs work out, and those are good odds. If you pick 2 QBs in the first round in back-to-back years, odds are you find a good QB among the two. So If I'm a GM and the owner guarantees me any job security, I consider trading Newton for at least 2 first round picks. Newton must improve.

Obviously have to wait for the real numbers, and guaranteed money.

You mean that game that they still lost at home? :pachaha: And now people are jumping on the Clausen bandwagon? I didn't even know he had one. Nor does he deserve one. :scust:
