Despite his rookie year and subsequent slander, Clausen is more accurate than Newton right now. Clausen was impressive against the Lions (?) last year in that one game he played for the Bears. He was on time and accurate in the short game -- consistently more so than Newton, who I fear will never be accurate enough from the pocket. For all the fanfare against him, Clausen's career really shouldn't be over yet.

There's a 50/50 chance first round QBs work out, and those are good odds. If you pick 2 QBs in the first round in back-to-back years, odds are you find a good QB among the two. So If I'm a GM and the owner guarantees me any job security, I consider trading Newton for at least 2 first round picks. Newton must improve.
Clausen and Newton comparison :why:

Clausen is the reason we sucked enough to get Newton :dahell:

So this should set the market for Russell and luck.

Meanwhile in Carolina Cam waits for a extension..

rFBam_medium.gif

I'm not gonna lie, and you can disagree with me if you want, but I feel like this is some shyt that Beli or Jerruh is gonna come through and take advantage of when Cam's contract is up. The Panthers been outright dumb when it comes to helping Cam on the offensive side and if he's a UFA a year from now I'm slightly nervous that Jerruh at the very least will pull Cam Newton to the Cowboys.

Jerry should be thinking about Cam Newton in 2 years.

Outside of Bill Lazor's scheme, Cam is a worse QB than Tannehill. Cam basically needs a Chip Kelly guy to succeed best imho.

Jerry Richardson can continue to be cheap and be on this high character shyt all he wants. Cam with that new Wall of Dallas could be a wrap. Carolina Jerry Better stop bullshyttin.

@Killah Ray @No Sleep

:camdisdain:all yall nikkas need to kill yall self

If we fukked around and lost Cam because we're trying to be cheap, I'm seriously going to go for another team.

:camfdup:How you gone doubt our squad like that

He ain't going anywhere. Salary cap is about to go up, he'll get his money.

:camsalute:

nikka Gettlemen gone break the bank for Cam. He's more than earned it.

:camsmirk:me and the breh @Henry Orbit tried to tell yall nikkas

Probably one of those new Dalton, Kaepernick, Sanchez, Tannehill style QB contracts. The guarantees are probably really only injury guarantees and money for each year becomes guaranteed after a certain point that yea after year 1/2.
Nah. Ain't no way Cam and his agent went for that. He might not be their best player (Luke) but on the national level Cam IS the Panthers. He had a down year, due to injury, but previous seasons he's carried that offense damn near single-handedly.

No, but what was the point of investing money in McNabb, knowing that he wasn't accurate enough to actually win a Superbowl? Clausen is overall more accurate than Newton and in time can become a good cerebral pocket passer like Matt Hasselbeck. Matt won a Superbowl.
Matt won nothing he been to one though :dwillhuh: your sports knowledge is atrocious man

His agents confirmed is was not the Kaep/Dalton style of QB contract. I didn't think his agents would either, but Cam was probably the biggest test case to see if the new style QB contracts would be the standard going forward for non top 5-7 QBs.

Why Cam Newton is NOT deserving of a $100 million dollar contract

The Carolina Panthers are reportedly on the verge of signing quarterback Cam Newton to a five-year extension, bringing his contract value over $100 million, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Without seeing the guaranteed money, it is impossible to critique the deal, but one thing is very clear: Newton is not worth a cap-crippling contract.

Newton was the first-overall pick in 2011 and since then, has been somewhat of an enigma. The 26-year-old is 30-31-1 when starting and has won the NFC South twice, along with chalking up a playoff victory. Even with a terrific defense led by Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly, Newton has only posted a winning season once and that playoff win? Beating Ryan Lindley in a hideous game.

The Heisman Trophy winner isn’t a bust, but he certainly isn’t the quality of other top-level quarterbacks who have been drafted high in recent years. Andrew Luck and Matthew Stafford have both been markedly better, and one could compare first-round pick Ryan Tannehill to Newton as well. Newton has the flash and sizzle of a star, but his production is middling.

Newton’s main problem is accuracy. Through four seasons with the Panthers, Newton has never eclipsed 62 percent and last year, regressed from 61.7 percent in 2013 to 58.5 percent. For comparison’s sake, Newton ranked 29th of 33 qualifying quarterbacks, ahead of Derek Carr, Josh McCown, Brian Hoyer and Drew Stanton.

Perhaps more telling, Geno Smith and Blake Bortles were the two players who finished directly ahead of him.

If Newton’s accuracy was a product of missing on deep, contested throws, it would be more understandable. However, that’s not the case. Newton only averaged 6.98 yards per attempt last year, coming in 25th. The two players ranking ahead of him were Austin Davis and game-manager extraordinaire Alex Smith. The touchdown-to-interception ratio was also far from impressive, sitting at 18:12.

All too often, Newton misses open receivers because he fails to get through his progressions or is late throwing the ball.

I'ma unleash the flutes on em @SubZeroDegrees :banderas:

Let’s take a look at Newton’s struggles with a few plays below, captured on All-22 film courtesy of NFL.com.

At the bottom of the screen, Kelvin Benjamin is ready to run a crossing pattern against man-to-man coverage. In the slot, Jason Avant is running a dig route and will end up on the numbers of the 30-yard line. This is a perfect call against man coverage, allowing Benjamin to use his speed and size, while Avant can utilize his crisp route-running.

In the blue circle, you can see Benjamin has clear separation from his man. At the top of the screen in the red circle, Avant is making his break. Newton should be able to complete a throw to either without any problem, but the ball has to be out now. Instead, check out Newton. The ball is in his hand without the throwing motion started.

The result is Carolina being forced to punt, as Newton throws high and wide of Avant. The New Orleans Saints’ corner had time to recognize the route and close on the ball because Newton threw it far too late. Also, note how close Avant and Benjamin now are. This is because Newton’s timing was off drastically.

Here’s another example of how misreading the defense can cost you:

Carolina decides to run Brenton Bersin (bottom of the screen) across the middle, which draws double coverage. Tight end Greg Olson is split to the left and will also draw two defenders off the snap. With the first down marker at the 39-yard line, Newton also needs to keep tabs on running back De’Angelo Williams, who is going to slide out of the backfield and into the right flat.

The double coverage is clear. Olson is blanketed in the black circle while Bersin is guarded closely in the red circle. However, look at Williams and the space he has ahead of him. Williams has swung his head around and could easily pick up the first down and more. Instead, Newton fails to read the defense and never sees him.

It’s impossible to see here, but Newton throws this ball with horrid form despite a clean pocket. He doesn’t step through the throw, letting his upper body do all the work. The pass ends up behind Bersin, who somehow gets open due to the worst double coverage in the history of football. Unfortunately, Bersin can’t corral the pass, which ends up becoming an interception. If Newton makes the correct read and uses good fundamentals, this is a first down in field goal range.

These plays show up consistently when watching Newton on tape. He makes tremendous throws at times and uses his athleticism to break big plays, but his fundamentals and accuracy are terrible. While he doesn’t have Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin on his team, a supporting cast of Olson and Benjamin is nothing to laugh at. Carolina needs to add much more, but other quarterbacks have done more with less.

In fairness to the Panthers, it is understandable why they are going to pay Newton in excess of $100 million. The potential is there, and from a marketing standpoint, the former Auburn star is golden. Additionally, even mediocre quarterbacks in this age are getting paid a mint.

Last offseason, the Cincinnati Bengals paid Andy Dalton $96 million over the next six years, expiring in 2020. Dalton is yet to win a playoff game and threw for 3,398 yards with 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2014. The San Francisco 49ers gave Colin Kaepernick $114 million over six years with $61 million guaranteed. Last season, Kaepernick completed 60.5 percent of his throws with 19 touchdowns and missed the playoffs.

Ultimately, Newton’s career will be judged on his success in January and February. To this point, those accomplishments are limited despite playing in a poor division. Newton must understand how to make the simple plays before becoming an elite quarterback, worthy of such dollar figures.

Until that maturation comes, Newton is an overpaid signal-caller on an underperforming team.

I'll wait :sas2:
