I am against the wrong practices of Meta AND I'm against the wrong practices of Chinese companies.
Then your outrage should be clear on the double standard at play. American tech companies have been caught, many times, violating data and security protocols. Yet none have been banned.

If we want to be naive and say it's about security, it doesn't make sense.

If we aren't being naive, then it should be clear this is about control. And it sets a dangerous precedent.

So if you're against bad practices, hold your elected officials accountable.

They were more effective and stringent on banning this app than banning weapons that kill over 200 people every 5 minutes in this country. Reconcile that in your head

The idiots of this country voted for Trump, I didn't :manny:

I would love for there to be better data privacy protections for both American and non-American social media apps. People largely don't care though.

Yes, because fukk the Chinese government.

You bring up Elon Musk (fukk him too) but yet handwave the Chinese government. Why?
I’m not dumb enough to fall for anti-china propaganda. These endless anti-china, anti-Russia, anti-north Korea, anti-black American, anti-Hispanic immigrant, anti-Arab propaganda etc etc etc agendas are designed for white americans and their fearful, hate-based culture.

You can’t actually articulate why you personally are anti-Chinese government. The Chinese government has never done anything to you :mjlol:

Yep, I agree with this. I don't trust Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, or any of these platform holders, and I especially don't trust a platform connected to an authoritarian government, but I think the best way to counter their exploitative practices is by pushing for strong universal data privacy laws. If this is really about privacy, and the need to protect user data, then we need to pass legislation requiring platforms to store ALL their data locally, fully open up their algorithms and data pipelines feeding them, disclose their ties to foreign governments, and be subject to strict regulations and independent audits with real penalties for breaking the rules - and not just a simple fines, but criminal penalties. Transparency is the best way to counter this, and if they don't want to abide by those rules, they can go elsewhere.
