lisanne-froon-kris-kremers.jpg

One week after the Dutch girls Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon went missing, the camera belonging to one of them took 90 photos between 1:00 and 4:00 AM. If we calculate an average, one photo was taken every two minutes.

Just 3 of the 90 pictures taken on 8th April and retrieved from the memory card by the Dutch Forensic Medicine Institute show clear images. In the other photos, nothing can be clearly identified.

THE THREE CLEAR PICTURES

The first picture, which we will name photo 'A', was taken at 1:38 AM. The only thing to be seen is a rock surrounded by low vegetation. One minute later, photo 'B' was taken; it shows the branch of a bush over what seems to be a rock, surrounded by similar plants of that of photo 'A'. The branch has in each end a red plastic bag. Close to the branch, there are chewing gum wrappers and other papers to be seen.

With which purpose were this photos taken? Was someone trying to send a message? Is the amount of pictures taken a sign of desperation or of imminent threat?
We can't affirm the pictures were taken by Kris nor Lisanne. It could have been someone else who pressed the shutter.

Without a doubt, a proper research would help find out in which part of the path between the Pianista trail and the banks of the Culubre river -where the remains of both girls were found- , were the photos taken, thus providing important information that would help figure out what happened to the young women.

THE GIRLS WENT MISSING

On 1st April, Kris and Lisanne visited the Pianista Trail near the well-known town Boquete, located in the panamanian province Chiriquí, close to the border to Costa Rica.
What began as a touristic hike, became a tragedy from one moment to the next. The girls who enjoyed their expedition and posed for pictures, were calling for help a couple of hours later.

No one who looks at the images, where both girls appear, can suspect that they were in danger. Nevertheless, two hours after the last photo was taken, on the same day, at 16:39 to be more accurate, Kris was dialing 112. Something was wrong. It was the first of a series of calls that the girls made to the dutch emergency line.

12 minutes later, at 16:51, other call was made, this time from Lisanne's Samsung cellphone, calling the same number.

What happened during this time, in which the adventure turned into a tragedy?

The Dutch forensic report states that 8 calls to the emergency line were made from the girls' cellphones. The last one was on 3rd April. The report also points out that it wasn't possible to obtain the position from which the phonecalls were made, nor the path that both girls followed after 1:00 PM on Tuesday, 1st April.

THE REMAINS

According to the report of the Panamanian Forensic Medicine Institute (IMELCF), a femur, a tibia and a foot belonging to Lisanne Froon -a total of 28 bones- were analysed.
Between the pathologies detected, the researchers found 'periostitis', which is a medical condition caused by inflammation of the periosteum, a layer of connective tissue that surrounds bone. It appers usually when the person accelerates their level of training, which causes the muscles to be pulled.

The IMELCF also analysed a rib and a pelvic bone belonging to Kris. No pathologies were detected in her remains, albeit organisms from the environment. In criminology, the finding of these microscopic organisms is useful to define the possible place of death.

DIGGING DEEP

Enrique Arrocha, lawyer of the Kremers family, wants answers. He also demands that the prosecution defines their hypothesis. He doesn't find convincing the theory that the prosecutor Betzaida Pittí -in charge of the research- sustains. She states that both girls were dragged by the river Culubre.

The lawyer takes into consideration the low levels of water that rivers have when the dry season ends, which is insufficient for dragging a body. Hence, he requested Pitti to rethink her hypothesis and run field tests that consider the time between the last photo -where both girls appear- was taken and the first emergency call.

The remains were found on the banks of the Culubre river, located on a 12 hour hike from the Pianista trail, one month after their disappearance.

FROM OUTSIDE OF PANAMA

The case of the young dutch girls has called the attention of a group of volunteers from several nationalities that follow the case via Internet.

They maintain a virtual debate about their theories, based on the time lapse that beholds the first day of their disappearance, the search by rescue teams, the emergency calls and a chronological map of their belongings and remains.

Within this group of volunteers, some support Arrocha's theory and state that what happened to Kris and Lisanne wasn't an accident. According to them, it is highly possible that the girls were murdered.

In 1900, the only living souls on the Scottish island of Eilean Mor were three lighthouse keepers, alone in the vast ocean.

The day after Christmas, a supply ship arrived at the island. To the crew’s surprise, the lighthouse keepers were not waiting for them on the island’s small dock. After blowing the ship’s horn and sending up a flare, there was still no activity on the island. A replacement lighthouse keeper named Joseph Moore was eventually sent to investigate.

As he climbed the narrow, rocky stairs leading up to the lighthouse, Moore recalled being struck with a sense of nameless dread. As he neared the door, he saw that it was unlocked. Stepping carefully inside, he also noticed that two of the three waterproof jackets usually kept in the hall were missing. Reaching the kitchen, he found the remains of a meal and a chair lying on the floor. The clock in the kitchen had stopped working. The lighthouse keepers were nowhere to be seen.

A further investigation revealed the disturbing final entries in the lighthouse log. The entry for December 12 was written by a keeper named Thomas Marshall. In it, Marshall claimed the island had been struck by severe winds, worse than anything he had experienced in his career. Even though the lighthouse was solid enough to outlast any storm, Marshall wrote that the Principal Keeper, James Ducat, was very quiet. The third keeper, William McArthur, was an experienced sailor and a famously tough tavern brawler. The log entry ended by noting that he had been crying.

Further entries recorded that the storm continued to rage for a few days. Secure in their lighthouse, the three men had nonetheless begun praying. The last entry stated: “Storm ended, sea calm. God is over all.”

Though the lighthouse was visible from the nearby island of Lewis, no storms were reported in the Eilean Mor area during the days noted in the log entry.

NOT AN UNSOLVED MYSTERY BUT STILL PRETTY DOPE BREHS

The "Mystery On Fifth Avenue" apartment
In 2004, Clough and 212box took on the renovation of a 4,200-square-foot, 1920s co-op with views of Central Park, originally owned by Marjorie Merriweather Post and E.F. Hutton. The now-owners, Maureen Sherry and Steven Klinsky, are Wall Street financial experts and purchased the apartment in 2003 for $8.5 million. They hired Clough to renovate, and as a surprise for the family's four young children, he built into the apartment an elaborate "scavenger hunt" comprising 18 clues implanted into the fabric of the rooms. The puzzles involve ciphers and riddles to secret compartments, a narrative tracing inspiration through 40 historical figures, and a soundtrack featuring original music by Canadian folk musicians Kate Fenner and Chris Brown.[15] J.J. Abrams paid six figures for the rights to a New York Times article about the apartment entitled "Mystery on Fifth Avenue,"[16] and is now working on a feature film about the mystery apartment.[17]

After Abrams bought the rights to the article, Clough left him a response in the form of an encrypted message, which was meant to be pointed out to Abrams via another New York Times article, "Monumentally Mystifying: Power of Secrets Inspires Public Art".[18]

The Chase Vault

story of the Chase Vault could come straight out of a pulp horror magazine, but it is, by all accounts, true. The vault is located on the tropical island of Barbados, in the cemetery of the Christ Church Parish Church in Oistins. It was originally built for another man, James Elliot, in 1724, but Mr. Elliot was not buried there. The only body interred while Elliot owned the crypt was Thomasina Goddard on July 13th, 1807.

The vault was named for Thomas Chase who purchased the crypt in 1808. His infant daughter, Mary, was interred on February 22, 1808, in a heavy lead coffin. Goddard’s wooden coffin was undisturbed. Mr. Chase lost his other daughter, Dorcas, in 1812, and she was also buried in the vault. Her coffin, also a large, lead casket, was interred on July 6th.

Shortly after Dorcas was laid to rest, her father Thomas also passed away. On August 9th, 1812, the vault was opened to accept Thomas’ casket, but the mourners were shocked to discover both Mary’s and Dorcas’ coffins were disturbed. Specifically, they were tossed around the room, with Mary’s coffin against a far wall, standing head down. Authorities assumed vandals had caused the disturbance, the coffins were replaced, and Thomas was laid to rest. The authorities did not explain how vandals had managed to casually toss about lead coffins that took eight grown men to move.

If this was the only incident, the story would have faded to obscurity. However, when Samuel Brewster Ames, another infant, was interred in the vault on September 25, 1816, again the coffins were found disordered, some stacked on others, yet the marble slab covering the entrance appeared to have not been moved. When the vault was again opened on November 17th, 1816, for Samuel Brewster himself (the father of the infant) again the coffins were moved. Everything was set right again, resealed, and forgotten… but the stories began to grow.

On July 17th, 1819, the body of Thomasina Clark was to be interred in the vault, and this time the local authorities were present for the opening of the crypt. Even the governor of Barbados was supposedly in attendance, and once again they found the coffins thrown about the vault like a child’s discarded blocks. Goddard’s coffin was also in very bad shape, splintered and falling apart as if squeezed. The coffin was tied together and placed against a wall, the other coffins returned to their positions and the door was sealed.

This time, however, the governor had sand dusted over the floor and he sealed the vault himself with his official seal to ensure no one disturbed the vault. No other entrance to the crypt existed, and it was hoped that whoever was responsible for the vandalism would be stopped by the seals or caught by the footprints in the sand.

In April of 1820, the governor ordered the vault opened for inspection. The seals were all intact, the sand was undisturbed, but the coffins, again, were thrown about. It was said that the sturdy side of Dorcas Chase’s coffin had broken away, revealing a skeletal arm reaching out. The governor ordered the coffins moved and buried elsewhere and the crypt permanently sealed.

To this day it remains undisturbed…by man at any rate.

Oakville Blobs

The townspeople of Oakville, Washington, were in for a surprise on August 7, 1994. Instead of their usual downpour of rain, the inhabitants of the small town witnessed countless gelatinous blobs falling from the sky. Once the globs fell, almost everyone in Oakville started to develop severe, flu-like symptoms that lasted anywhere from 7 weeks to 3 months. Finally, after exposure to the goo caused his mother to fall ill, one resident sent a sample of the blobs for testing. What the technicians discovered was shocking – the globs contained human white blood cells. The substance was then brought to the State Department of Health of Washington for further analysis. With another startling reveal, they discovered that the gelatinous blobs had two types of bacteria, one of which is found in the human digestive system. However, no one could successfully identify the blob, and how they were connected to the mysterious sickness that plagued the town.

The creepy case of the letters.
Circleville is a small city in Ohio that has a population of over 13,000. Its biggest event is the annual Circleville Pumpkin Show. It is also the home of a mysterious letter writer known as the Circleville Letter Writer. Starting in 1976 residents of Circleville began receiving mysterious, vindictive letters. Thousands of letters, written in block letters were sent to city officials and even normal citizens. One recipient of the letters was school bus driver Mary Gillespie. She received letters accusing her of having an extra-martial affair with a school official. On August 19, 1977 Mary’s husband Ron Gillispie received a phone call seeming to indicate the identity of the writer. He left his house with his gun to confront the writer. He was found dead a short distance from his house. His car was driven off the road and his gun had been fired once. He died as a result of the crash and it is unknown why he fired the gun. It is unclear if it was an accident or murder. Later, while driving her bus, Mary saw signs along her route harassing her. She went to take one down and discovered a booby-trap meant to fire a gun at her. The gun belonged to her former brother-in-law Paul Freshour. Freshour was convicted of attempted murder and was thought to be the Circleville writer. However, while incarcerated the letters continued despite him being in solitary confinement without access to letter writing material and his mail being monitored. He was denied parole because of the letters and received one himself after his parole was denied.

That's explained pages back - the radiation was always a red herring. It was only a trace amount and only on one sweater/jacket, not on the other people and not on the bodies. There are lots of ways to get trace amounts of radiation on a piece of your clothing - thorium from the camp lanterns, something spilled in one of the labs that several of them worked in (they were all from a Polytechnic Institute), something spilled while one of their friends in a lab was borrowing the clothing, something that was hanging outside when fallout from the frequent nuclear tests of the 1950s occurred, etc.

If radiation was a part of the incident, it would have been on some of the bodies and on someone else's clothes. But it wasn't, just on one sweater/jacket, which makes it almost certain that the sweater/jacket was contaminated in a separate or very minor event.
I remember reading that radiation wasn't apart of the official report, it was something made up by Internet theorists in order to make the story more mythic

Genuinely Weird Cases

Murder

Industrial/Chemical Accidents

  • The Byford Dolphin Incident - It's not often you get to see the phrase "expulsion of the ... thoracic spine"
  • Karen Wetterhahn - spilled a few drops of dimethyl mercury on herself and died from it less than a year later
  • Hashashi Ouchi Radiation Exposure - Be very glad that the article doesn't include pictures of the poor guy. They're out there if you feel like being completely disturbed.
  • Goiania Accident - This one really hits hard because these people just didn't know what they were doing and a lot of them suffered and died because of it.
  • The Demon Core - A couple of fatal nuclear accidents happened around and because of this ball of plutonium. It acquired a reputation for being unlucky or downright malicious.
  • The Texas City Disaster - A large scale industrial explosion, complete with spooky pictures. Credit to/u/MyKidsareOCD
Creepy Torture Stuff

  • Unit 731 - one of the more disturbing things to come out of WWII
  • Scaphism - One of the worst ways to die in my opinion.
  • Brazen Bull - Though this is a close second
Generally Creepy

Will update and add more as I remember.

Edit: That's all the ones I care to remember right now.

Edit Edit: One more, because it's kind of fun. Extremely loud, weird noises picked up by NOAA hydrophones in the deep ocean. There's been a bunch of theories about what these could be, from icequakes to monsters bigger than the biggest whales.
