He played his part perfect. He was the perfect sidekick. He held his part strong and didn't outshine denzel. People underestimate how hard it is to be the straightman which denzel was. Think abbot and Costello, Kenan and Kel. Kel outshined kenan so much with his antics it took shine away from kenan.

Everybody knows Ethan Hawke was at his best in that movie...Oscar worthy like Denzel ? Nah but he definitely was at his best...I didn't know there's ppl who look at Training Day as a one man (Washington) show.
Training Day is definitely not a one man show, even though Denzel was so great in it he overshadowed a very good Ethan Hawke performance.

But if there is one movie where a superstar carried what would otherwise be a very average film, it was Denzel in He Got Game. His acting and the score of the film, and some of the camera angles used, made up for some horrendous acting and spotty writing.

Ethan Hawke is a pretty good actor.
I thought he did well.

The thing people should keep in mind is that Hawk's character really wasn't the main focus of the film. The story wasn't particularly written "for him"...certainly the best dialogue wasn't.
Training Day was a great movie, and you can't have a great movie being carried by 1 actor. They all were good....except for Dr Dre. He was awful.
