I always heard Will Smith started improving the end of the scene, and using his own experiences when he was talking about not needing his father to teach him how to love his kids, learning to shoot ball without him, etc, and that Uncle Phil really started breaking down, and that the hug was genuine.

Will could have shown Uncle Phill the ultimate respect by flipping this situation. If, upon Phill trying to comfort him he stated he was fine he already had Phill as an example and father figure. That shyt would have been

That episode is a classic and every aspect of the word. There aren't too many other sitcoms that had a scene as powerful as that one.
