Comedy series "Uncle Buck" will not be renewed for a second season at ABC, Variety has confirmed.
Star James Lesure first revealed the news on Twitter Wednesday, writing, "Disappointed. No more @ABCUncleBuck. Cancelled. Thankful to have worked with @ABCNetwork. Proud of what we've done. Thx 4 let us entertain u." ABC then confirmed the cancellation.
The season one finale of "Uncle Buck" aired Tuesday night. ABC had run off the eight-episode season over the course of four weeks, airing two episodes a night on Tuesdays at 9 and 9:30 p.m. Just an hour before word came of the cancellation, ABC issued a press release touting ratings for the series, which averaged 3.8 million total viewers in Nielsen live-plus-same day numbers, an 81% lift from ABC's performance in the same time period over the course of the same four weeks a year ago. "Uncle Buck" also averaged a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demo, more than double ABC's average from a year earlier.
Based on the 1989 feature film starring John Candy, ABC's "Uncle Buck" featured comedian Mike Epps as an irresponsible uncle who becomes a live-in nanny to his nieces and nephew. Nia Long, James Lesure, Iman Benson, Sayeed Shahidi and Aalyrah Caldwell also starred in the show, which was a co-production of Universal Television and ABC Studios. The series was executive produced by Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley with Will Packer through Packer's overall deal with Universal TV.
