Beneil Dariush did recently, welterweight fighter Jorge Masvidal also spoke out against this trend of smack talking in MMA.
“I can talk, if I want to,” Masvidal told media members during a pre-fight scrum this week. “What am I gonna say? ‘Oh, you’re a punk!’ then he calls my mom names. It’s f—ng childish, you know.”
“I get it. The 17-year-olds are f—ng eating this sh-t up. Maybe some people never got out of high school. But if it’s not a genuine dislike between two people, and it’s not creative either where it’s just f—ng annoying sh-t talking like ‘you’re an idiot! Well, you’re stupid!’, man. It’s f—ng so stupid, man.”
“It sucks that ret-rds could just say your name and you guys (the media) make them famous,” he continued. “Because the fans will eat up whatever you guys do. Maybe we could not f—ng do that? Maybe not every guy that mentions someone’s name ‘Oh, so and so said this!’”
“It’s f—ng corny, man.”
Masvidal had quite a rough childhood consisting of constant street fights and backyard brawls. This upbringing has led him to feel that a continuous trend of smack talk may lead to fatal repercussions, at worst.
“Someone’s gonna get killed one day,” he said. “You say the wrong sh-t to the wrong player, you’re gonna get f—ng popped. We’ve seen little incidents with Conor and the Khabib stuff, and that’s kinda mild. It can get a lot worse than that. My friends ain’t professional fighters. But, if a situation occurs, we’re gonna win. I’m not gonna get into details, but we’re gonna win.”
“It’s just stupid, because I don’t do that. I don’t come from that, but if I get put in those situations, believe me, I’m not gonna be the one that’s hurt.
“So to a lot of these guys that see it as ‘oh, it’s cool to talk sh-t’ and the sees somebody in person and talks sh-t, you kinda gotta be careful, man,” he added. “Because not everybody grew up like you. Not everybody went to university and hugged legs for a living and thinks how you think. Some guys might f—k you up wherever they see you.”
Masvidal is slated to headline this Saturday’s UFC card in London, England against Darren Till. The fight will take place at the O2 Arena.
