I've been saying for weeks now that gig workers are getting screwed with the high gas prices. Most of these gig apps didn't up their payouts to account for it (and on some of the apps, the payout went down). The rare times they get any sort of gas adjustment it's like 10 cents per ride or delivery, which is not nearly enough to offset the gas price increase.

If it was a real job your employer would cover those costs. But Uber etc. are trying to pass all the costs of business onto their "not employees" while the owners only reap the profits.

Uber Reaches Deal to List All New York City Taxis on Its App

Company that vowed to disrupt the U.S. taxi industry is now betting that traditional taxis will fuel its next wave of growth

Uber Technologies Inc. is becoming friends with a former foe.

The company has reached an agreement to list all New York City taxis on its app, an alliance that could ease the ride-hailing giant’s driver shortage and temper high fares while directing more business to cabdrivers, whose livelihoods were affected by the emergence of car-sharing apps and the pandemic.

While Uber has formed partnerships with some taxi operators overseas, and riders in several U.S. cities can use its app to book taxis if cabdrivers choose to be listed there, the New York City alliance is its first citywide partnership in the U.S. New York, one of Uber’s most lucrative markets, has been a battlefield for the company and the city’s iconic yellow taxis for years.

“It’s bigger and bolder than anything we’ve done,” said Andrew Macdonald, Uber’s global mobility chief. The company expects to launch the offering to riders later this spring.

I'm rooting for them because fukk taxis. My shyt is personal. Can't tell you how many early mornings, I had to ask drunk white girls to get a taxi for me in DC when cabs would just pass me by.
Question. Im from a driveYourself/car-ownership state so im genuinely curious how this works for you guys.

What stops you from just calling a cab company directly and organizing a ride with their dispatch people? In my state the cab density is low enough that this is the standard way to get a cab. You'd think this direct approach could offset the bias you face as a black person from the drivers.

I went to Denver last month and paid $70 to go from the airport to downtown Denver. Was not expecting that. Later, I found that a train ride would of cost me $10.50. Game has changed.
Tbf DIA is nowhere near downtown Denver.

Nah, they were almost entirely replaced with Segways.

They're getting desperate. Not a good look, IMO. The "exclusivity" factor of UBER was one of its main draws, now it just looks like another shytty taxi app.

You have to hail taxis…especially when you are leaving the club drunk at 2:30am.

In Toronto cab's routinely rip off passengers by stealing their bank cards. They also pray on drunk girls coming from the clubs, and generally sit around taxi stands talking shyt all day, ignoring the people trying to flag them down. Most are also uber drivers though. I once jumped in a cab after a long night of dj'ing. Needed to go from the downtown club area (King and Spadina) to East York (Danforth and Dawes) basically a 30 minute trip over to the next borough. Now in Toronto once you get in, they can't deny your trip. I was already in and the guy was taking about he ain't taking me home. I pleaded with dude, let him know I just worked and was on my feet for like 6 hours straight. He called the dispatch and cops on me. I switched it up on him and the cop and told them I know the rules since my pops, aunt and grandfather were all cabbies back in the day. So unless another cab pulled up and gave me a free ride I wasn't getting out. fukking pig told the cab driver to drop me off in Etobicoke. Thats the whole other end of the city. I told both of them I wasn't drunk, and that shyt wasn't going to happen. After 30 mins of me sitting and not budging dude had no choice but to drive me home... They ain't shyt. They will complain about Uber, then turn around and ignore people. As a driver Uber is more lucrative, you don't need to own a taxi license, or rent one, and people can rate the driver.
