right.. I have no idea about any of this so I don't presume to speak with knowledge, but I mean, even if he wasn't exposed, with that gun was he presuming to aim at something way over there? both sides seem to be spraying near randomly so no point in moving a few feet closer
edit: the description seems to say that he was getting hit anyway and moved down to draw fire so his squad could get away from the machine gun

seems like video games spoiled us. from the looks he was laying down cover fire. Most modern warfare fire is suppressive fire. EDIT: He was. He was drawing attention away from his group.

That's not the point of fire movement and fire and maneuver tactics. This was a poorly trained individual, most likely belonging to a Reserve/National guard unit. The Army (NG) is notorious for this.
Considering he had a carbine and not a SAW, his single rifle provides nowhere near the volume of rounds to provide acceptable suppressive fire. This dude was sitting there, standing off in the open, with no concealment and no cover, while silhouetting himself against the sky, and nowhere near angle to effectively shoot or have his rounds fall into a beating zone that might actually prove somewhat useful.
What he did was try to play hero, got lit by some poor marksman (you can see the enemy rounds miss him considerably throughout the video) or someone shooting from an extremely long range (most likely scenario), and now had to put his squad/platoon in danger by trying to save his ass.
There is a reason why units maneuver in fire teams or squads, and not as individuals.

im not military expert, but that seemed really dumb. i didnt see him aim at anything the whole time and what was the point of even going down that hill
