So we're going to ignore the many Christian circles where they used to Bible to support emancipation?

Nope. But that's the thing about philosophies and religions. Each and every one has atrocities and goodness under their belt. My post was referencing the poster I quoted, who said that the "atheist community" - for which one should note doesn't really exist except online because atheists really aren't really connected for the most part because we have no means nor interest for meeting on scheduled days - are racist. Christianity has done tons of sins and evil in the past 2000 years, so pretending like it hasn't and casting off stones is intellectually dishonest.

Even Buddhism has the casting aside of women monks in Theravada Buddhism, the rise of Japanese monarchy and Nihonjinron philsophy and Japanese imperialism, and the current situation in Burma. No one group is excluded from the "inerrant" and self-coddling nature of man. This doesn't take away from the good things people have done under these philosophies and religions, but to conflate that one does that another hasn't is banal and ignorant.

Naw, you had Quakers and some evangelical groups that tried to get something popping around the 1700's. But the point is, there should have never been a need for a abolitionist movement and it shouldn't take 400 years to end something like that. The majority of people in the country during that time who were christian were down with slavery.
AND. YOU. KNOW. THIS. MANNNNNN :salute:

Peace sis, You make some great points. They only thing I would say is in the Buddhist doctrine the 4 noble truths and the 8th fold path, there is no mention of committing any type of violence. You can't even kill animals I believe and it's the same with Jainism. Now to your point about the followers still doing bad stuff, is spot on and they gotta get called out for that. But in this case, we can look at the people from these religions and match them up against their doctrine to see if they are following it. In the case of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, they will have a commandment that says thou shalt not kill, then you can find a scripture were it's okay to commit genocide, rape, killing and slavery. With Jainism and Buddhism you will not find that type of contradiction in in their doctrine. That's why people are usually shocked when they hear about a Buddhist monk doing bad things or committing murders in Burma because you can't find a scripture from Gautama Siddhartha (THE BUDDHA) that supports that. But great points overall

I agree with most of this...my problem is that if a book is contradictory, even if it says some permissible things, its at best a book that can't be taken to lead in a certain concrete direction of any value

Buddhism is definitely on some bullshyt:
