The buy rate for Gervonta Davis’ most recent win was the second highest of his five pay-per-view fights.
BoxingScene.com has confirmed that the four-fight pay-per-view show that featured Davis’ ninth-round technical knockout of Hector Luis Garcia on January 7 ultimately will produce somewhere between 200,000 and 225,000 buys. Davis’ previous fight, a sixth-round knockout of rival Rolando “Rolly” Romero on May 28 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, generated slightly less than 250,000 buys.
Showtime has distributed each of Davis’ five pay-per-view main events, wins against Garcia, Romero, Isaac Cruz, Mario Barrios and Leo Santa Cruz. The network has aired the popular knockout artist’s last 12 fights either on pay-per-view or live on the network, which is owned by Paramount Global, also the parent company of BoxingScene.com.
Baltimore’s Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) hurt Garcia badly with a left hand toward the end of the eighth round of their 12-round fight for Davis’ WBA world lightweight title. Garcia (16-1, 10 KOs, 3 NC), a southpaw from the Dominican Republic, declined to leave his corner for the start of the ninth round because he said he couldn’t see.
Garcia trailed Davis by scores of 79-73, 79-73 and 78-74 through eight rounds.
The card that featured Davis-Garcia also attracted a capacity crowd of 19,731 to Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The Davis-Romero card seven months earlier established an attendance record for boxing events at Barclays Center (18,970).
Davis’ victory against Garcia earlier this month secured his place in a bigger pay-per-view fight against rival Ryan Garcia.
Their representatives have exchanged contracts for another Showtime Pay-Per-View event that is expected to take place at some point this spring. Davis, 28, and Garcia, 24, are expected to meet at a catch weight of 136 pounds.
The date and the site of the Davis-Ryan Garcia fight have not been finalized.
