Just started the collection that recaps the HHH-HBK feud in Summer 02. Forgot how well done that was, that was prime heel HHH all leading up to one of my favorite matches and the return of the GOAT

More Invasion thoughts:

I'm pretty sure this was intentionally tanked from the start. That or WWE had the most incompetent writers at the time. WCW is portrayed as both scrappy underdogs that deserve a chance to compete against Vince's evil empire, and as invading pieces of shyt with dudes like DDP stalking Taker's wife and the majority of the "invaders" attacking popular talent and champions. The WWF is portrayed as both the evil empire and good guys defending their territory.

From day one, it was about the McMahons, but that gets even more ridiculous when the Vince/Linda divorce angle becomes the main catalyst for WCW being given time on WWF TV officially. Then, in less than a week's time, both the WCW Champion and tag team champions are literally beaten to a pulp and thrown out the door on TV. Vince spends most of his time fukking around with Austin/Angle in comedy segments (which are still genuinely funny) or trying to get laid instead of worrying about the invasion. There is a big group of mid carders that never wrestle on the main shows who are out to beat up WCW guys every week, while the people that actually DO wrestle on TV every week seem to not notice the invasion is happening at all unless they're a top guy. Even the guys that WCW stars actually invade against don't mention it again in any of their promos.

Then you have WCW finally having their first match on WWF TV, which is under 5 minutes and has the crowd chanting BORING and THIS MATCH SUCKS 2 minutes in. Then both guys get the shyt beaten out of them. You have Vince doing both heel cheap local heat promos and face general rallying the troops promos every week. You have Shane doing face promos every week, but clearly sending his heels to do heel things. You have the face mid carders beating up other midcarders and WCW talent as if they were on the same level. It's a MESS every week. A single episode of SD has Linda hyping up WCW for face heat, to NBT interfering and getting DESTROYED for heel heat, then ending the show with Booker and Shane attacking Austin and scurrying off to get face heat. Just terrible writing. The messaging is so awful.

WCW looks like shyt at every possible angle. It only even exists on WWF TV because Shane's mom put the screws to Shane's dad over divorce shyt.

Lmao, then the SD after the Buff/Booker match, Booker and DDP have a match which sees DDP repeatedly try to injure Booker, then lures Taker into a trap with the rest of the C team. Shane pulls DDP off of Taker, so DDP beats up Shane. Then Booker is like "wtf", so the WHOLE WCW ROSTER beats up Booker, their champion, 2 weeks before the big WCW vs WWF PPV.

The quality of booking just completely nosedived almost immediately after Mania 17. The product just felt different....very unfocused and illogical and things have pretty much been that way since. I dunno if it was a case of Vince spreading himself too thin with the XFL and the WCW deal or them just running out of steam but the product has never recovered from the Invasion angle.

Like...WCW starts invading, then they actually invade MSG, even stealing a title, and Booker attacks Vince. The next 3 shows, Vince is more concerned about his divorce/getting his dikk sucked than anything to do with WCW. Austin is less worried about WCW and more concerned with keeping Vince's love. There is the group of mid carders led by the APA that are always on the look out for WCW, but the crew that actually works TV seems to exist in its own universe where the invasion isn't happening, even when WCW guys interfere in their matches. And the Hardcore title that Mike Awesome won AT MSG wasn't even mentioned again for at least 2 weeks. My thought was maybe they were trying to set up storylines for the WCW solo show, but it seemed clear that that was really not in the plans considering they had the only two "money matches" (DDP/Buff vs Booker) in the first week, and the roster would have been 2 faces, an authority figure, and 10 heels. All of the heels which were apparently united as a group.

Another big thing is how shytty Edge's writing is. He wins KOTR, but gains nothing from it, instead becoming a Mcguffin for Christian's character development, and the way to explain why Angle was hanging out with Vince/Austin. Edge himself does absolutely nothing after winning the KOTR besides cutting some really, really, really terrible promos. Edge in general was awful during this period. Dude was such an awful promo.

In fact, WCW only exists on WWF TV because Linda McMahon was holding divorce threats over Vince's head and basically forced him into it because he didn't want to lose half of his money. And Shane is like "mom said this, mom said that". It's pretty pathetic, really.
