The buildup to JBL vs Eddie at Judgement Day was amazing, although pretty:mjpls:

Bradshaw blatantly saying, "If she dies, she dies!" after Eddie's mom having a heart attack in the middle of the ring was so demonic.

JBL cracking Eddie upside the head with a chair busting his head wide open:birdman:

Then Eddie busting JBL's head with his title belt.:demonic:

that brawl was bloody as hell...

It's pretty wild the Eddie/JBL thing was wrapped up so quickly. They had great chemistry, there was legit heat in the angle. It only ended up being a 2 month feud. Eddie got one rematch after the title change and that was that.

Yep, Eddie/JBL was dope af.

Epic big man v little man angle... Both knew their roles, could put on good brutal matches.

Could've easily done at least 1 more ppv. Eddie should've had more run as champ imo

I actually thought maybe this new JBL character won't be so bad after all, but mannn... after the Eddie feud, this dude bored me to tears or the rest of the year.

It could have gone on the rest of the year, easily. They had Eddie teaming with JBL at the end. That man tried to kill his mama. :picard:

The reason they killed the JBL vs Eddie feud is because it wasn't drawing shyt. Eddie Gurrero and JBL were two of the worst drawing champions of all time.

And yet they kept the belt on JBL for a year and gave him more and more screen time and show focus as his reign went on so I don't buy that as a reason.

The ppv buyrates for both their matches at judgement day and great american bash were horrible and way down from the previous year. JBL was a better draw then Gurrero as champ and they were setting JBL up to lose to Cena. Eddie Gurrero was the worst drawing champion in history which is why he never got a rematch

Let's look at what Eddie was given to work with:

A feud with a career mid carder with a sudden extreme gimmick change and main event push

A SD that had just lost Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle. After a sudden JBL push, the top heels were probably the Dudley boys. The undercard for Judgement Day featured:

Cena vs Rene Dupree
Chavo vs Jackie
the debut of Mordecai
Charlie Hass and Rico vs Billy Gunn/Hardcore Holly
Taker vs Booker

The undercard for GAB:

Luthor Reigns vs Charlie Hass
Sable vs Torrie
Kenzo Suzuki vs Billy Gunn
Mordecai vs Hardcore Holly
and the actual main event was Taker vs Dudleys

Hulk Hogan was the biggest draw in the world at his height be even he would draw much better with certain opponents (like Orndorff, Piper, and Savage, and not Perfect/Rude/various monsters). Eddie was given absolutely nothing to work with, then blamed for it, and a guy even less of a draw than him they kept the title on for nearly a year anyway. Of course, they said the same thing about Benoit when he was working with HBK and HHH, who never got any type of blowback.

There wasn't even a Great American bash the year before :dead:

And it's not all Eddie's fault... WWE as a whole was fukking trash after the attitude era died with rock n austin gone. You had HHH reign of terror killing people's interest too. I know I stopped watching WWE as a whole, not because of Eddie but because HHH on Monday night was unbearable.

Also... I thought Kevin Nash was the "worst drawing champion of all time".
I think it's bullshyt, it's not all the champions fault. It's the writers giving us bullshyt storylines to follow..

You can also see with a historical context that no one made a difference in 20 years besides Cena, and even then that was only for about a year and a half. It hasn't mattered who was champion, how hot anyone was, how much merch anyone moved. Ratings, buyrates, houses have precipitously declined for 20 years regardless of who was on top. Be it HBK, HHH, Lesnar, Angle, Guerrero and Benoit, JBl and Taker, Jeff Hardy, Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, Seth Rollins, CM Punk, Edge, Roman Reigns, AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose...none of them stopped the bleeding that has been going on consistently since WM 17.

Eddie and Benoit were definitely bigger draws than Rollins and Reigns due to still being higher in the crashing wave.

I can only imagine Vince absolutely raging seeing these JR segments on Superstars in 1994. JR constantly umming and uhhing, clearly reading the lines, the timing is always off with the pre-taped promos he's throwing to and sometimes interacting with. They seem exactly like the kind of things that he'd flip his shyt over and demand be redone 30 times.
