No wonder WCW went under they'd have a packed house at the Houston Astrodome yet they give fans a night full of kendall windham, renegade, norman smiley, prince iuakea, silver king, emory hale and scott putski, topped off with the main event being kevin nash, goldberg and bam bam bigelow getting only 3 minutes to brawl. :francis: I feel sorry for anyone that paid to see that shyt live or had the stomach to sit there and watch it for an entire 3 hours

So when Faarroq debuts, King calls him Ron Simmons. His first match is decimating Skip while Sunny trash talks him. Cold blooded cucking :wow:

1996 Raw sucks. It's just...so uninteresting. A bunch of long matches but in a period where they weren't doing exciting stretches in them, so most were extended squashes or just dull with fukk finishes (unless it was HBK, who goes over clean no matter who the opponent is on Raw), a lot of angles and match announcements were still happening on Superstars despite Raw being the flagship for 3 years at this point, angles will get a ton of TV time (like Jake vs King, or the HBK trying to fukk wrestler wives, literally every Goldust angle) and one day just end without being mentioned again.

Then there's that weird period in the summer where, after getting away from gimmicky gimmicks, the SMW guys all come in with shyt they wouldn't have even done in 1991-1992. Overall there seems to be little to no sense of guys moving up the card beyond Austin. All the other guys who end up fighting for the IC title just get put into angles with the champ regardless of wins/losses, most of HBK's matches and defenses are because he got attacked, not because anyone was becoming number one contender. The tag division revolves around Sunny, to the point where there's no mention of the titles or any of the teams (and there are only 4 fukking teams anyway) for like 2 months after she decides to manage Faarooq.

What's really weird is usually every week, or at least every other week, they devote a chunk of Raw to showing off how hot and big their house shows are and how successful their meet and greet events are, but their TV doesn't reflect it at all, especially as the NWO stuff is popping off on Nitro. Around the summer they start doing smaller arenas, but the crowd audio is always a sound machine for all the tapings and the upper areas are always empty or dark.

The energy is just strange, I guess. The production and 3 weeks of tapings at a time nature feels so stale compared to the real sport presentation and real world vibe WCW had going on at the time.

EDIT: Also god damn at how shady it was for them to sell tickets to a show where they promoted both Razor/Diesel AND Bret Hart returning, only for Razor/Diesel to be imposters and Bret's returning being revealed to be a lie from Brian Pillman...but not before they promoted and sold tickets on the basis of their returns for 2-3 weeks.

Ugh thunder in 1999 just sucks, the card is filled with nothing but jobbers plus the obligatory luchadore match and goldberg showing up at the tail end for a squash.

Vincent was in the west texas rednecks as "curly bill"

The Raw before Buried Alive 1996....HBK vs Steve Austin. It's billed, multiple times, as THE BIGGEST MATCH IN THE HISTORY OF RAW. This is pretty lol since despite Austin having won KOTR and being built up for Bret's return, he really doesn't have much momentum, he's STILL feuding with Savio Vega, he has a count out win over Taker but otherwise is still just doing mid card stuff. I don't think he's even had a single promo on Raw since the KOTR.

The match itself has the first half in split screen because of promos from Sid and Vader/Corny over their number one contender match at Buried Alive, then a bunch of JR doing his shooty bullshyt shytting on Vince, and then the match ends with a run in from Vader and Sid. :mjlol:

It's actually kind of amazing Austin blew up the way he did, because his booking certainly didn't do him any favors. Had Bret not personally played king maker, I think there's a good chance Austin would have just floated around in the mid card for years, being a once in a while IYH main event level guy. It really seems that heading into Survivor Series 1996, Vince still doesn't see shyt in him.

This was months before the USA vs Canada angle, at this point Austin's run after KOTR was: More matches on Superstars than Raw, multiple loses to Marc Mero, a count out victory over Taker, and his biggest win between KOTR and Survivor Series is probably a rematch with Jake Roberts. Bret picking Austin to be the guy he wanted to work with and putting him over as the best wrestler in the WWF (after burying HBK lol), then the classic at Survivor Series did everything for Austin. He was really doing nothing at all before Bret said he wanted to work with him.

Also of note: The night Bret came back and announced he'd return at Survivor Series against Austin, the yet to debut Rock is in the back around the monitor with the rest of the crew.

The next week of Raw is the first time Austin gets to start talking that shyt on Raw and his stock instantly skyrockets.
