The region warrants specialized training and is a hotspot for extremism. It makes more sense especially if you're doing field training to send them out with the Green Berets instead of non JSOC.

the thought of america having soldiers here for anything ultimately other than our own self interests is laughable
america and its military do plenty of good around the world. it doesnt come close to outweighing the bad. from an objective perspective, not an american one

In this case they were patrolling together with nigerien army personnel in the west/northwest of Niger. Just over the border with north Mali which is infested with Al Qaida and affiliated terrorist groups and hit with terrorist attacks on a daily basis. Whereas Boko Haram is active in the far southeast of Niger. US Special forces have been very discrete to the point we almost forgot their presence compared to the french who consider this whole area their backyard. Let me finish by saying the french are not trusted and hated by some because like elsewhere, in Mali too they play that moderate rebels, terrorist rebels game. While just two weeks ago it was reported the american authorities have denied a visa to a major rebel leader who was(idk if he still is) on a wanted terrorist list.
