- Trump is so (as @AZBeauty alluded to) narcissistic, he couldn't leave the Mueller findings alone and pushed for his own narrative. Which clearly indicates there is no one in the White House who can counsel him to chill the fukk out.
- The Mueller report damaged him enough with independent and undecided voters in areas like Pennsylvania and Michigan that they felt a powerful response was needed even if it meant extortion.

He didn't, that's lawyer speak. Especially with the let's not communicate by text message. Everything before that clearly sets out Trump's agenda.

Trump got GREEDY
He held back the military aide not just once but twice.
Not everyone on his staff was on board with the first delay, but Trump probably would've floated the first delay through unscathed. Ukraine committed to looking into 2016 elections because they wanted a White House visit anyway. Trump's staff was on board as well, albeit some reluctantly.
Then Trump held the aide back a second time.
This confused Ukraine and the entire Trump staff who helped set up the previous agreement and White House visit (after July 25 call). More than likely, during this time Trump is pressing for the Biden investigation behind the scenes with Giuliani independent of the other ambassadors. (this is not in texts)
This sends all kind of alarm whistles off, hence where were are today.
End of the day the Ukrainian president was probably okay with clearing Ukraine of 2016 election interference but not okay with looking into Biden because there was nothing there and he didn't want to involve his country in foreign political nonsense anyway.
That pissed Trump off because he probably felt the Ukrainian president 'agreed' to specifically look into Biden during the July 25 phone call.
Trump couldn't see his own beginning of the end. Ukrainian president was just telling him what he wanted to hear on the July 25th call because, yea he needed the aide, but he also wanted to badly visit the White House lol.
